Rocking The Cradle

Friedrich Holderlin warns us not to look before or after lest we be overwhelmed by stray psychic phenomena but to be rocked upon the water as if in a cradle concentrating on the moment; a cat’s cradle is a children’s game played with string in which form after form is created in succession; the English idiom cat’s cradle means as one delves into any subject the deeper one delves the more complex it becomes in a never ending ramifying or proliferating pattern; the song Golden Slumbers was adapted from a poem by Thomas Dekker:

Golden slumbers kiss your eyes,
Smiles awake you when you rise
Sleep, pretty wantons, do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
Rock them, rock them, lullaby

They say that the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world, meaning those who educate the young (the coming race) will dominate the earth, to rock the cradle can also mean to disturb the cradle as to rock something means to shake it up as in the English idiom indicating that something rocked my world, meaning one was sent into a kind of fugue state which is just beyond everything, and nothing after is as it was before. Normally, however, to rock the cradle indicates a soothing motion to lull a child to sleep as if hypnotically.

Predecessors of the rocking horse may be seen in the rocking cradle, the tilting seats used during the Middle Ages for jousting practice as well as the wheeled hobby horse. The toy in its current form did not appear before the 17th century, though some conflicting sources note medieval manuscripts including references to carved rocking horses, presumably of the toy kind.

Some say in the beginning
Was the word
Others a point in space
And they will quote
You chapter
And they will quote
You verse
But it was love alone
That rocked the universe

In the cradle of being is an uncreated and unconditioned will (or urge according to Pierce): a Divine Love which is given alternately to berserker frenzy and calm depending on its caprice or whim; it is beyond everything and beyond this no mortal man shall ever go; only to know, in the words of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, as a kind of lullaby, or a koan, or a sly and insinuating enigma like a wanton lark, that it loves to happen (event, see Out Of The Blue, White Biocentrism, August 25 2024)

***

Notes:

Wanton def: of a cruel or violent action, deliberate or unprovoked; capricious, willful; sexually unrestrained; growing profusely or lushly; lively, playful as in they sat gazing at the white-flecked pure blue sea and the various gulls that wantoned in the wake
