His earliest memory is that a Kite came down. He is grasping or groping back towards an early memory which is not clear in his mind. He thinks it happened but perhaps it did not, perhaps he only dreamed it. He said that it seemed to be his destiny to study Kites. The word destiny is also interesting in this context because it suggests what psychiatrists would term a compulsion or fixation or maybe even a regression. He is saying that some inner need which he does not comprehend impels him to study Kites, and he keeps returning again and again in later life to this strange bird "particularly." Destiny conveys that this is something other than conscious volition but is rather some hidden process secretly at work.
