1776: Thomas Paine publishes his pamphlet Common Sense, a revolutionary call for American independence from the British Empire and the overthrow of the existing government. It quickly becomes the best-selling publication in the thirteen colonies.

Less well known is his work The Age of Reason, a sound refutation of Christianity.
