1587: A group of a little over 100 English settlers arrives on Roanoke Island off North Carolina. These people, including the first English child born in North America, Virginia Dare, would disappear mysteriously by 1590, leaving only the enigmatic inscription “CROATOAN” on a tree near a newly-constructed palisade, with many believing they were captured or massacred by Amerindians.
