1972: American astronaut Eugene Cernan becomes the eleventh — and, to date, the last — person to walk on the Moon, after he and Harrison Schmitt complete the third and final extravehicular activity of the Apollo 17 mission.

To clarify, twelve men have walked on the moon. Eugene Cernan was the eleventh to walk on the moon but the twelfth and last to step off the moon.
