Last Year At Marienbad

Post by Wade Hampton III » Fri Dec 06, 2019 3:01 am

The film takes place in an elegant chateau,
one with ornate ceilings, vast drawing rooms,
enormous mirrors and paintings, endless
corridors and grounds in which shrubbery
has been tortured into geometric shapes
and patterns. In this chateau are many
guests - elegant, expensively dressed,
impassive. We are concerned with three
of them: “A” (Delphine Seyrig), a beautiful
woman. “X” (Giorgio Albertazzi), with
movie - idol good looks, who insists they
met last year and arranged to meet again
this year. And “M” (Sascha Pitoeff), who
may be A's husband or lover, but certainly
exercises authority over her. He has a
striking appearance, with his sunken
triangular face, high cheekbones, deep
- set eyes and subtle vampirish overbite.

Elegant, mysterious, timeless and beautiful
No dialogue. Only music and images. A perfect
world. Thank you.!

"Tortured?" It depends on your point of view. The courtyard
scenes were shot on an overcast day, and the shadows of the
participants matte painted in later:

How come the pointy shrubs don't have shadows? You'd think these movies with their multi-million-dollar budgets could get a detail like that right

I am opinioned that this surrealistic manifestation
of the characters was done deliberately by the
director - much in the manner as you see in the

...The dream-like nature of the film has fascinated and baffled audiences and critics; some hail it as a masterpiece, others find it incomprehensible.

Put me in that second group. :D
