White nationalist hate groups spread flyers, stickers on campus

by Kaitlyn Little, News Editor
August 22, 2019

A campus-wide email sent on Thursday afternoon informed the San Diego State community that white nationalist hate groups had spread flyers and stickers around campus.

The email, sent by Chief Diversity Officer J. Luke Wood and Vice President for the Division of Student Affairs Christy Samarkos, said at some point last night or this morning, flyers and stickers were posted around the campus.

The materials specifically targeted the Women’s Resource Center and the Pride Center on the southern end of campus. There was also at least one flyer found in a Daily Aztec newsstand.

The materials promote the ideologies of white nationalist hate groups and are similar to those that have been found on different campuses across America. One flyer specifically denounced communist ideologies.

“While free speech is constitutionally protected, for this particular matter, the flyers violated San Diego State University’s Buildings and Grounds policy and are being removed,” the email said.

The university denounced the hatred and intolerance of the flyers and stickers, while recognizing the value of respecting diversity and inclusion.

Some support services offered on campus include Counseling and Psychological Services and the Employee Assistance Program. The email also said Dean of Students Randy Timm is available for students who may need help.

“We know we are most productive and innovative when we are able to come together and work together in acknowledgement of our diverse experiences, social identities, religious and spiritual affiliations and political alignment,” the email said. “We unitedly proclaim that we will not allow hatred to divide us.”

Additionally, the email encourages the collective responsibility of ensuring a safe campus environment. People may report suspicious activity to the University Police by calling (619) 594-1991 or submit an anonymous, non-urgent tip by emailing [email protected].
It was Patriot Front, but to view articles and broadcasts from 5 or 6 different local media outlets you wouldn't know this. One of them showed a destroyed poster that had a portion of the Patriot Front name still on it, otherwise all of them have colluded to keep PF's name out of their stories.

Communities wrestle with rise in white supremacist propaganda

On an electric box outside the Shaw’s in Williston, a poster — propaganda for the white nationalist group the Patriot Front — featured an eagle crest and the slogan “Keep America American.”

The poster, plastered over a “Bernie for U.S. Senate 2018” sticker, encourages people to report “any and all illegal aliens,” sharing the tip line number for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In navy and red print, the design appears fairly innocuous; the only indication of its origin is the group’s website url at the bottom.

The poster went up less than a mile from where calls to the ICE tip line would be answered, at a U.S. Department of Homeland Security facility. Last month, hundreds marched through Williston’s streets nearby, protesting immigration policies and the treatment of migrants on the U.S. southern border.

To the Williston Police Department’s knowledge, the poster is the first Patriot Front has put up in town. The organization, categorized as a white nationalist hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, has placed similar posters around Chittenden County.

The spate of postings in Vermont comes at a time when white nationalist organizations have increased propaganda efforts across the country, according to watchdog groups. That’s left communities and local leaders navigating how best to respond.

In Billings, Montana, where white supremacist groups have spread pamphlets, Mayor Bill Cole said it’s important for leaders to swiftly denounce it as “deplorable.”

“That’s an easy call,” he said in an interview Thursday.

But, he said, it is worth considering the specifics of the situation. If only a few people are aware of a poster, it might be better to avoid publicizing it and potentially encouraging the group, he said.

“In that situation, I think a good case could be made that we should not give racists a megaphone,” he said.

Instances aren’t common in Billings — he attributes activity to one or two “bad apples” — but he said the community has come together to show unity. After swastikas were painted on a school last year, he wrote an op-ed in the paper condemning the actions and the community held public meetings. No one was apprehended, he said, but it stopped.

“This is a problem that exists everywhere,” he said. “It’s just a matter of degree.”

White supremacist propaganda has sharply increased in recent years, according to the Anti-Defamation League. The group recorded 1,187 incidents of racist, anti-Semitic and Islamophobic posters, stickers, fliers and banners being distributed nationwide in 2018 – more than twice the 421 cases reported in 2017.

In Vermont, 35 instances of Patriot Front propaganda have been recorded so far this year, a steep increase from a total of five last year, according to Nora Cohen of the Anti-Defamation League in New England.

“I think it’s a result of the polarized world that we’re living in today,” Cohen said, pointing to a broader social and political climate in which some people feel more free to speak their minds.

Cohen said many people may not be aware of what the Patriot Front is. One of the group’s tactics is to appear patriotic and attempt to appeal to young audiences. Meanwhile, members try to avoid the public eye and their material is not always easy to peg to the group, she said.

“If you don’t know what the Patriot Front is, you would suppose that this is something else, not necessarily a white supremacist group,” she said.

In Williston, it was unclear when the poster was put up. But someone had made an effort to ensure it was affiliated with the Patriot Front. A corner appeared to have been torn from it, swastikas drawn on it with marker, and the DHS number scribbled out, with an arrow pointing to “1-IMA-NEO-NAZI.” (ICE did not return a request for comment on the inclusion of the tip line number in the Patriot Front poster.)

The Williston Police Department first learned of the poster on the electric box from a reporter.

“I have to go see what you’re reporting before I can say what we can and cannot do with it,” Officer Matthew Cohen said.

Cohen said it was the first sign of activity by the white supremacist group in Williston. He alerted Green Mountain Power, the owner of the electric box, and a company employee told him someone would be sent out to remove it immediately. He encouraged anybody who witnesses vandalism of any sort to report it to the property owner or the police department in the future.

Williston Town Selectboard Chair Terry Macaig condemned the Patriot Front poster.

“This is really incredibly stupid, uncalled for anywhere, but especially in Williston where we have a very big diverse population,” Macaig said.

Similar posters have appeared in the Burlington area in recent months. Last month, several were put up on signs for activist groups in the city, Seven Days reported. Posters have been put up at park-and-ride in Richmond, and in February, they were posted near Ohavi Zedek Synagogue and the Pride Center of Vermont.

Burlington Police detective Tom Chenette has been fielding calls about the Patriot Front around the city and Chittenden County for about two years, since the group had planned a demonstration on Church Street in early 2018. After a dormant period of about a year, there was a spree when several stickers were put up overnight in February. Since then, he said, “they’ve been kind of continuing sporadically.”

Police passed along information about the group to the Chittenden County State’s Attorney, which declined to prosecute the case because nothing rose to the level of criminality, he said. The group uses stickers, which don’t damage the surfaces they’re placed on, Chenette said.

“Our stance as of now is to track things, document things so that when they do eventually cross the line and do something criminal, we could show this pattern of behavior over a long period of time,” Chenette said.

Meanwhile, the activity has prompted sharp condemnation from city leaders. Mayor Miro Weinberger, who was unavailable for comment this week, said in February that “White supremacist groups like Patriot Front have no place in Burlington.”

In other communities around the country, public leaders have also been swift to make public statements decrying Patriot Front activity and labeling it racist.

After neo-Nazi signs went up in Leominster, Massachusetts, last month, the mayor encouraged residents to pull down any posters they saw. When Lansing, Michigan, residents reported removing more than 25 Patriot Front posters in February, the mayor issued a warning that anybody caught posting the stickers on public property would be ticketed for violating ordinance.

“There is a clear distinction between free speech and behavior that is intended to harass, intimidate, and precipitate hate crimes,” Lansing public officials said in a statement.

Lecia Brooks of the Southern Poverty Law Center said the best way for communities to respond is to raise awareness of the activity and the underlying message of the group. She recommends building coalitions — reach out to law enforcement, media, youth groups, faith-based communities, colleges and others, and “make a big stand,” she said.

Neo-Nazi Group's Stickers Posted Around Peekskill
Politicians will discuss the white nationalist message at a press conference in Peekskill Sunday.

PEEKSKILL, NY — Someone posted stickers from a white supremacist group called Patriot Front in at least two locations in Peekskill. On Sunday, Mayor Andre Rainey, state Sen. Pete Harckham, and numerous Hudson Valley elected officials and leaders will denounce the stickers and the group named on them at a press conference.

The event will be held at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, 648 Harrison Ave. in Peekskill.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has written details about Patriot Front, its origins in neo-Nazi circles after the violent rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and its anonymously posted sticker, posters and banners used as tactics across the country.

One of the bumper stickers was posted on top of a Peekskill Pride sign at the Rift comic book store. The owner of the Rift was angry and offended and said so on Facebook.

Arguments about the Peekskill incident raged on Facebook.

The discussion on the store owner's Facebook page about the group Patriot Front included disagreements about white nationalism.

Folks writing on Concerned Citizens for a Better Peekskill were skeptical about what happened. Peekskill Pride deleted what they called "less than productive comments" on the thread about it.

On Citizens Creating a Better Peekskill, someone wondered, "Timed to the anniversary of the Peekskill riots? Maybe."

State Sen. Pete Harckham posted this: <useless tweet snipped, just another gasbag blowing hot air for his audience>

Racist posters replace 13th Amendment doc screening across Weber State campus

(KUTV) Posters promoting the screening of a documentary on the abolition of slavery were torn down on Monday and replaced with posters referring to "anti-white propaganda."

The Alt-Right posters encouraged people to visit a website that had previously hosted articles such as "Genocide: The Inescapable Conclusion."

The original posters, which belonged to the Young Democrats of Utah, provided information on a free screening of "13th," a documentary investigating the connection between mass incarceration of black Americans and slavery through forced labor across the United States today.

Lorcan Murphy, President of the Young Democrats of Utah, stated “This is a red flag of the spread of radical white supremacy throughout America, and tragically our own state. We denounce in the strongest possible terms this act of racial hatred, and encourage Weber State University to respond in kind. Hatred like this cannot continue to be covered up by institutions of higher learning. We must face this head on.”

Students have arranged red plastic cups in the shape of a swastika. They’ve held up “We love White” signs. They’ve chanted a Nazi marching song.

Several high schools in Orange county, California, have been engulfed in scandal in the past year over racist behavior by some of their white students. This week, videos surfaced showing a group of boys from Pacifica high school in Garden Grove doing the Sieg Heil salute and marching with German and Confederate flags.

The latest controversy has reignited anger and anxiety among Jewish communities and students of color, with many questioning why this keeps happening. To some, the answer is obvious: white supremacy has a long history in Orange county, and officials aren’t taking the threats seriously. The consequences, they say, could be deadly.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Orange county was known as a recruitment hub for neo-Nazi groups, sometimes resulting in violence and hate crimes. And although it now counts more registered Democrats than Republicans, the county was long one of the blue state’s rightwing strongholds, with xenophobic, racist and homophobic politicians holding some of its top jobs.

“People have this skewed perspective of California – that it’s liberal, that it’s hippies,” said Melissa Shaw, a former Pacifica high school student, who is Jewish. “That was not my experience in Orange county … I felt like I was running from the neo-Nazis.”

Experts say the far right is still active and dangerous in the region. A member of a local militant neo-Nazi group was charged last year for murdering a 19-year-old gay Jewish classmate. The so-called Rise Above Movement (Ram), one of the most prominent white supremacist groups linked to recent violence, is concentrated in Orange county, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

“Orange county is a safe haven for Nazis,” said Jaime Segall-Gutierrez, a local civil rights attorney. “Not enough is being done to discourage this type of behavior. If anything, it’s being encouraged … because of the lack of accountability.”
Decades of swastikas and ‘sweeping under the rug’

“My initial reaction was, ‘same old shit,’” Flo Martin, a former Pacifica high teacher, said about the new Nazi salute videos. Martin taught German at the school from 1980 to 2003, and said it was not uncommon for white students to engage in hateful behavior: “Whenever there was an incident of antisemitism or racism, students would come rushing to my classroom and I would grab my camera and document it,” she said. She still has photos of a swastika etched into a school field.

Martin, 77, said school officials at the time were reluctant to conduct serious investigations or punish students – and she said she fears they still aren’t doing enough today. “It was a policy of sweeping stuff under the rug.”

Garden Grove school district officials have said the recent footage came from an off-campus event last year and that they addressed the situation with the involved students and families. But they only addressed the footage publicly after the months-old video was leaked to the Daily Beast.

Pacifica’s principal, Steve Osborne, said in a statement shared with the Guardian that “an investigation and consequences did occur” in March, adding, “We did a disservice to the entire school community by limiting our action to the small group of students involved. We are sorry that our investigation and our transparency … fell drastically short.”

It’s unclear how the students were disciplined.

Shaw, the former student, said the school’s inadequate response this month was all too familiar. The 39-year-old, who graduated in 1998 and is now an education consultant, said she faced regular bullying from white supremacist classmates, who at the time were recognizable by their Doc Martens boots with white or red laces. When she was a 16-year-old junior, someone burned the contents of her locker, and the school’s response was essentially to shrug it off, she recalled.

The first boy she dated broke up with her after he discovered she was Jewish, she added. She was regularly called slurs.

“It was a constant, slow dehumanization,” Shaw recalled. “There was this sense of being in danger.”

Steven Chandler, another former Pacifica student, said he was bullied for being gay, and that when there were incidents involving white supremacists, the school would prioritize the concerns of accused students’ parents: “They were worried more about their PR as opposed to actually addressing the issue.”

When he saw the news this week, he wasn’t surprised, but added, “I don’t think this is a prank. No one is dealing with the underbelly of what is going on.”

The Garden Grove district called the situation a “crisis” in a statement, saying it was creating a “taskforce to address school-based hate and bias” and would be working with community groups to implement “anti-bias campaigns”.

“It is unfair to paint a picture of an entire community based on the actions of a few individuals,” the statement continued, adding, “Our district is moving full speed ahead to stop hate speech in its tracks … We will continue to do all we can as educators to encourage a culture of understanding, care, and inclusivity.”
‘Law enforcement encourages Nazi behavior’

Segall-Gutierrez, the civil rights lawyer, said the problem was made worse by local law enforcement’s reluctance to take the threats posed by white supremacists seriously.

He pointed out that after violence broke out at a 2017 pro-Trump rally, the Orange county district attorney prosecuted a young anti-fascist activist and treated Tyler Laube, a member of the white supremacist Ram group, as a victim – even though Laube was prosecuted by the federal government and pleaded guilty to conspiracy in the case.

Segall-Gutierrez represented Jessica Aguilar, a 23-year-old student who protested the neo-Nazis and was accused of slapping Laube.

“It’s a blue county now, but it has a red heart … and that red heart is this little pocket of Nazis and a local law enforcement and a DA’s office that doesn’t seem to be too preoccupied with them,” he said.

Aguilar told the Guardian that the case had taken a toll on her, and that she believed police should be targeting the white supremacist groups as criminal gangs: “They are prosecuting people who are counter protesting but not these individuals who are out there being violent … Law enforcement is definitely encouraging this Nazi behavior.”

The Orange county district attorney, Todd Spitzer, defended his handling of the case in a statement to the Guardian, saying, “People who commit crimes will be prosecuted, regardless of who the victim is, or what beliefs the victim holds, or whether they too have committed crimes … As offensive as someone’s beliefs maybe, they have the right to express those beliefs without being assaulted.”

A lawyer for Laube did not respond to an inquiry.

Rabbi Peter Levi, the ADL regional director in Orange county said it was vital for schools to proactively intervene and disrupt hateful behavior, especially considering the evidence that white supremacists were now engaged in extensive recruitment efforts on campuses and online.

“We only know about this one because it was caught on video and shared,” he added. “This is just the tip of the iceberg.”
Holding up “We love White” signs and chanting a 'Nazi marching' song gets students disciplined. Culture theft, anyone? It's not a great leap from that to White genocide.

USD Staff Declining to Remove Unauthorized Anonymous Racist Posters from Student Center?
Posted 2019-08-27 05:56 by Cory Allen Heidelberger 11 Comments

The Volante reports that the anonymous creeps from Identity Evropa—now rebranded as the “American Identity Movement“—are back sneaking around the state posting their racist filth… and, at least in the Muenster Center, USD isn’t doing anything about it:

Posters from a white nationalist group appeared on bulletin boards in buildings on USD’s campus Monday morning.

The posters, one reading “Diversity Destroys Nations” above an illustration of a burning city and another reading “Defend America” above a painting of a white woman standing atop a globe and holding a U.S. flag, belong to the American Identity Movement (AIM), “a non-profit activist and fraternal organization,” according to their website.

Students and faculty reported seeing the posters in the Muenster University Center (MUC), Patterson Hall and Al Neuharth Media Center. Posters in Patterson and Neuharth have been removed. Posters in the MUC cannot be legally removed by University staff, as it violates campus free speech policy

The individual(s) responsible for hanging the posters is unknown [Austin Lammers, “Posters from White Nationalist Organization Appear on USD Campus,” The Volante, 2019.08.26].

That’s odd: my understanding of campus policy was that anyone seeking to post materials on campus property had to get permission from the university first. The MUC Advertising Policy opens with these requirements:

All signs must be brought to the Muenster Center Information Desk for approval. The Student Center staff will be responsible for hanging all signs. The Student Center staff will remove any non-approved signs.
All posters must display the name of the recognized student organization or campus organization that is sponsoring the activity [MUC Advertising Policies, University of South Dakota, retrieved 2019.08.27].

Unless someone at the MUC info desk received and approved these posters, unless Student Center staff put up these posters, and unless the posters have the name of the recognized student or campus organization that invited the white supremacists on campus, University staff can take this whiney white-boy crap down.
Comments are available at this highly biased student opinion rag, but expect any contrary to their views to be 'moderated' into the memory hole.

Racist poster found in Evanston
By Tom Wray on August 16, 2019

EVANSTON — A racist poster has been seen in Evanston, the liberal suburb just north of Chicago.

Local news site Evanston Now reported that the poster promoting the American Identity Movement was found on a traffic signal box at the corner of Chicago and Main streets in the southeastern part of the city on Friday morning.

The Southern Poverty Law Center said on a March 12 blog post that American Identity Movement is the new name for Identity Evropa, a fast-growing far-right group that became infamous after the Charlottesville “Unite the Right” rally. They classify the group as a white nationalist group.

Flyers for the group were found along the route of Chicago’s South Side Irish Parade back in March.

Evanston Now said that any posters on city property violated city code and people could call 311 to report them as graffiti to have them removed.

I know Chester was an Alliance member in bygone years and the original reason for his arrest and jail sentence was for his NA Unit leading protests against the illegal invaders.
I'm wondering "how?" this upcoming event is going to turn out?

Considering the advance notice giving antifa and the Jews time to organize and get hostile media sources lined up, these well-meaning former NA members are likely to see a sizeable crowd of hostiles and will be scrutinized intensely. I predict violence from the antifa side (which will be covered up by the jewsmedia) unless the local cops plan on keeping the groups separate and bring enough manpower to enforce this. It seems doubtful that Billy Roper nor Chester Doles will have the cops on their side.

With that said, what will they gain for their trouble? There's not much I can see at this time. I wish they'd take Dr. Pierce's thoughts to heart on this matter and wait until such time as we have the dominant voice in media and the government staffed by our people.
