18-year-old Austin Sauer, a student at Rhinelander High School in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, was arrested Thursday for alleged child enticement, sexual assault and exposing genitals to a child in the school's "gender-neutral" bathroom.
According to a spokesperson for the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, the high school’s gender-neutral bathroom has now been closed to the student population by school officials following the alleged assault.
WAOW-TV reports, the bathroom was opened in October of 2019, as a way of helping to make transgender and “gender expansive” feel more comfortable.
Capt. Terri Hook says the school did not notify parents of the incident because it was reportedly an isolated incident.
In a statement, Rhinelander School District Superintendent Kelli Jacobi said that “This was not a random incident, both students went into the bathroom voluntarily. That bathroom is no longer available to students. The male student will no longer be able to be on the school grounds.”
Sauer has not yet been charged by the Sheriff’s Office. He was released on a $1,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court in April.
