‘The Cop was Being a Cop!’: Former ICE Dir. Slams Fairfax Police for Suspending Cop for Helping ICE
Former ICE director Tom Homan in an interview with “Fox & Friends” Wednesday morning slammed Fairfax County Police Chief Edwin Roessler Jr. for suspending one of his officers for cooperating with ICE.
The officer was “relieved of all law enforcement duties” after turning over a driver who had a warrant out for his arrest for failing to appear to a deportation hearing.
Roessler issued a statement about the incident, saying this “damages our reputation” and that he has “stated many times that our officers shall not act as immigration agents,” as MRCTV reported Tuesday.
Homan said that Roessler “ought to remember what it’s like to be a cop” and for him to punish a cop for “being a cop” is ludicrous.
"Here's a police officer responding to a traffic accident caused by an illegal alien that has no driver's license, has no insurance. He ran him through the system. There's an outstanding warrant from ICE because he's in the country illegally. He's a fugitive from justice because he didn't show up in court," Homan said. "The cop was being a cop!"
"And, for the chief to suspend them,” he continued, “maybe the chief ought to remember what it's like to be a cop. Because the chief stopped being a cop when he made that decision. He became a politician.”
The identity of the officer suspended has not been revealed publicly.
As if it weren't enough to suspend his own officer for following the law, the Fairfax police chief has also ordered an internal investigation into the Sept. 21 incident.
Homan said that Roessler has made it clear that “the community comes second; politics come first.”
