Genesee County Prosecutor mentions local hate speech incident involving child

FLINT TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Genesee County Prosecutor David says his office is investigating an incident of hate speech between an 11-year-old and a group of fellow students via the internet.


Leyton spoke before a crowd at the Temple Beth El in Flint Township during an interfaith prayer service for the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting victims.

While he would not disclose where the child was from, he did say the message contained ‘racist hate messages’.

A mother of one of the students who received the messages contacted police who then went to the 11-year-old’s home.

Among other items found in the home was a picture of the child wearing a Ku Klux Klan outfit with his hand on a weapon, according to Leyton, who added Child Protective Services was contacted and the child was temporarily removed from the home.

Leyton says his office has filed a petition in family court alleging neglect.

Leyton told the gathered crowd at Temple Beth El he started thinking what every one of them must have been thinking: “What would cause an 11-year-old to dress in a KKK outfit and spew hatred across the internet?”

He added “we should not jump to blame the parents,” noting there had been a ‘difficult divorce’ in the family.

“We need to reach that child now, or he could grow up to become another Richard Bowers, or another James Earl Ray,” Leyton said, acknowledging the suspect in the Pittsburgh shooting as well as the man convicted of assassinating civil rights leader Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr.

For the rest of his time at the podium, Leyton pointed to this local incident as the sign of a need for tolerance and justice.

No other details were provided on the alleged hate speech incident.
