"L2A2" ammo in brown cans? That's a British designation for military arms/ammo. American cans are painted green too, not brown. American ammo is often designated as "M80 Ball" (for 7.62x51 FMJ NATO small arms ammo, for example) with the "M" being followed by some number to identify it as US military equipment.

I might be former USAF, but at numerous gun shows I've seen plenty of surplus cans and ammo too.

It is entirely possible that American-made ammo could find its way into British-style and -marked cans though. Only an examination of the cartridge's headstamp would give us a better idea of the ammo's origin.

Ammo can's don't mean much. They're recycled often to suit the needs of different groups, sometimes repainted, sometimes not. Let's see the headstamps on the cartridges!
