A Georgia woman named Joyce Sweetheart Cole is drawing some attention for some very unorthodox parenting methods.
The trouble started when the mother of three was called into her 11-year-old son’s elementary school because the boy had been caught bullying a girl.
Sgt. Dana Pierce of the Cobb County Police Department tells People that the mother scolded the boy at the time, warning that she would “embarrass” him if another bullying incident occurred.
According to KETV, the boy was then caught up in another fight at school with the same girl just weeks later on the morning of Halloween.
The children had an argument after the boy offered to trade candy for a juice box, and the little girl took both.
Cole was called into the school shortly afterwards to discuss her son’s behavior.
Following the meeting, Cole came up with an unusual punishment for her son.
Police say that the mother took her son's clothing and forced him to walk through the school parking lot naked.
Teachers scrambled to try to cover the embarrassed boy as classmates looked on.
Sgt. Pierce described the incident to People:
The meeting ends and the parent stripped the 11-year-old of his clothing and sent him on out to her car in the parking lot.
The school’s staff, including several teachers, went to the 11-year-old’s aid, trying to clothe and cover him so he could avoid being embarrassed.
People reports that the mother smacked the boy on the back of the head as he walked naked to the car, and then drove him home.
But the humiliation wasn’t over yet.
Pierce told People that she refused to let the boy dress once they got home to their apartment complex, and forced her son to walk naked from the car into their home:
Just prior to arriving at their apartment complex, she again told him to get out of the car and he was told to walk home, into the apartment complex, without clothes on.
Police were contacted, and the mother was arrested on child cruelty charges the next day.
She paid her $5,000 bail and was released the same day, according to People.
KETV reports that Cole has yet to plead her innocence but allegedly told police that she only forced her son to walk around in his underwear, not nude.
All three of her children have been taken into protective custody.
