Letter from Charm City.
Colin,
I’m a huge fan and I’ve found a great deal of relief listening to / watching / reading your work. I’ve become so fed up and disillusioned with life in Baltimore. Finding ANYONE that shares similar feeling regarding black violence and it’s effect on my city, is frustrating (to say the least.) Perhaps the frustration isn’t finding those who share my beliefs, it’s finding those willing to express said beliefs. Aside from a 6-year stint in NYC, I’m a lifelong resident. I’m 32, I’m white, and I work as a graphic designer.
White people in this city refuse to come to terms with what’s happening. The “people” to whom I’m referring are educated, reasonable, and capable of making educated assumptions and calculations. However, when it comes to black violence, they somehow completely lose all capacity to recognize patterns and / or make calculated assumptions based on facts. I write that last sentence with my tongue planted firmly in my cheek. I (we) both know they they aren’t actually unable to go through the machinations. They clearly suspend logic when considering their plight as whites in hugely violent, predominantly black city.
Everyday, as human beings, we make hundreds of decisions based on prior experiences – decisions big and small. Last time I bought apples from Safeway, they were rotten. I’m not going to buy them this week. I noticed parking in my neighborhood was tough when I got home after 6 PM. I’ll leave work a little earlier tomorrow. You get the point. The human experience is basically cause and effect and the subsequent recurrence and recollection of previous cause and effect determinations. For whatever reason, whether it’s fear, or guilt, or biased disbelief, white people (particularly liberals) cannot / will not recognize that black people are completely out of control in this city. More so, they refuse to recognize that they are under attack.
I’m sure you get a million emails and I’m afraid that mine is already too long. So, I’ll leave with a short description of situation happening in part of the city. I live in largely white part of the city called Canton. It’s pretty affluent by Baltimore standards. It’s bordered on 2 sides by equally nice neighborhoods, one side by water, and on the north side by the hood. Over the past year a half (although I assume it’s been going on longer,) the neighborhood residents have been the victims of assaults, robberies, murders, etc – all at the hands of blacks. Of course the closer you go to the north end of the neighborhood, the more victims you’ll find. The resident use a Facebook page to report (and generally b*tch) about the crimes taking place. In my opinion, it’s more about catharsis than about actually warning fellow resident of the happenings.
Over the summer a group of 5-6 MIDDLE SCHOOL aged blacks began terrorizing canton residents. There are countless accounts of the violence – everything from harassment, to assault, to robbery. Of course, no one actually did anything. “Prayers” were offered to victims, others expressed sympathy for kids and plight in life, while others went as far as tracking down their identities, contacting their school administrations and attempting to offer them jobs. Not kidding. Anyone who offered up an ass kicking as a possible preventative measure was quickly berated by the facebook group. It’s gone on for months. Adults being terrorized by a group of 12-14 year old.
This is just one of 100 stories I could tell. This is from over the summer.

All while a nearby crowd cheered…
Thank you again for what you do.
