Elderly lady hijacked in Somerset West
-
Posted by admin
-
Sue Smuts (86) was hijacked in the driveway of her home in Helderview, Somerset West on April 29, 2015.
Smuts was returning to her home having just completed her weekly food shopping at Pick n Pay.
-
As she approached her gates she saw a man in her rear view mirror running to catch up with her. As he came level with her window he spoke, she couldn’t hear what he said so opened the window further.
The male promptly leaned in opened up the door, yanked the lady out of her car where she fell to the ground, got in the car and drove off, leaving the lady on the ground obviously very distressed but relatively unharmed. Not that the hijacker knew or cared.
-
SAPS arrived on the scene with detectives to assist the lady and gather as much evidence as possible to track this perpetrator down. A counselor, who works with SAPS and the Neighbourhood Watch (NW) attended the incident to offer support and assistance. The NW coordinator came across the scene whilst walking her dog shortly after the crime and immediately offered help which is ongoing.
-
The hijacker was now in possession of a Fiat Uno and a week’s worth of groceries with the bill for said food.
-
He took a decision to visit a Pick n Pay in Eerste River, near where he lived with the intention of obtaining a refund on the groceries! Stupidity and greed was to be his undoing.
-
Staff at the store were highly suspicious and removed the till receipt from the hijacker, all the while the CCTV cameras were filming him.
-
Pick n Pay using the smart shopper card details on the receipt undertook some investigation themselves. SAPS were called and with a little more detective work found the car which was parked in a local area.
An operation commenced and the hijacker was arrested as he approached the car.
Albertus Bredekamp, a family member, said Pick n Pay contacted the ladies local store at Waterstones and a parcel of food to replace all she had lost, a gift voucher and flowers were personally delivered to the victim by the Manager of the store.
Smuts wished to publicly thank the SAPS detectives “who were professional and compassionate throughout”, the counselor for her support and to Somerset West Neighbourhood Watch for their ongoing support.
-
Finally a big thank you to Pick n Pay for their wonderful gift.

Boy, 8, in coma after brick flies through car window
-
By: Jody Nel, Netwerk24

-
Johannesburg - An 8-year-old boy is in an induced coma after a brick flew through the passenger window of the car he was travelling in, striking him on the head.
-
The boy is a victim of a series of four reported incidents of brick-throwing last Thursday, allegedly perpetrated by the same man on the N12 near The Glen shopping centre, south of Johannesburg, Netwerk24 reported on Monday.
Justin Slabbert and his two children, Caden and daughter Eden, 11, were on their way to their Benoni home on Thursday after being picked up from school in Krugersdorp.
-
At about 14:30, a man walking on the N12 threw a brick through Slabbert’s passenger window.
After hearing the noise, Slabbert checked on his two children immediately. His daughter Eden was unharmed, but he received no response from Caden, who was bleeding from the head.
-
Luckily, a Netcare911 ambulance was travelling on the same stretch of road at the time of the incident.
-
Slabbert, spotting the ambulance in his rear view mirror, pulled off to the side of the road to seek medical help for his unconscious son.
-
More incidents:
-
Before long, a second car had pulled up to the ambulance on the side of the road, reporting a similar incident.
-
The driver, Darrell Badenhorst, reported that his 42-year-old girlfriend, Marionette Schwab, had been struck on the head by a brick a few metres further down.
-
She too, was unconscious, and bleeding from the head.
-
A third car also pulled up to the paramedic to report the same incident, but no injuries were reported in this incident.
-
Both victims were treated at the scene and transported to hospital.
-
Recovery:
-
Doctors said that they feared the 8-year-old would not survive the ordeal, but a successful surgery has seen him make a remarkable recovery.
-
He is expected to be brought out of the coma on Monday. Part of his skull had been removed to prevent further swelling on the brain.
-
Both Schwab and Caden are stable and will have brain scans this week.
-
Metro Police Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, spokesperson for the Johannesburg metro police, confirmed a brick was also thrown through a fourth car window on Thursday. It was unclear whether anyone was injured in the incident.

“White people are disgusting”
-
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has suspended one of its lecturers who allegedly made racist comments on her Twitter profile, pending a disciplinary hearing.

This is according to the trade union Solidarity who initially called for disciplinary action in a letter to the university.

Solidarity industry head of the professional industry, Johan Botha, said that the lecturer, for a considerable period of time, made ‘snide’ and ‘destructive comments’, especially towards white people, using her personal Twitter profile.

Murdered for a phone. A true story about life in South Africa

December 1 by Marian Brooke 32 Comments

This doesn’t make easy reading, nor was it easy to tell. But it’s a story we believe needs to be told because although our lives have been torn apart, ours is not a unique situation. To have someone murdered in South Africa for something as trivial as a mobile phone, happens on a daily basis and, inconceivably, is considered to be a ‘normal’ occurrence.

Murdered for a phone: a true story about life in south Africa. As the trial starts next week for the murder of Jeremy Brooke, his family wants to share their story and ask why this is allowed to happen? As a family, we lived in South Africa for 35 wonderful years – I will always be glad I had the experience of growing up in London and then spending more than half my life in Africa. But it wasn’t all wonderful. We came to regard burglary and crime in general as something inevitable, considering it with some cynicism, that we were, in effect, doing our part for the ‘Re-distribution of Wealth Programme’. We always felt relieved to find our car still where we left it, even more so when it hadn’t lost a wheel or had a window smashed. Arriving home to find that your house hadn’t been broken into and your belongings, even your underwear drawers, rifled through, always brought a sense of relief.

During the last few years it became more and more traumatic. We lived in a rural area only a short distance from Johannesburg and would often hear gunfire at night, or be woken to helicopters searching the area – usually unsuccessfully. Worse still, a number of our neighbours were murdered while we were there and more have been murdered since we left.

It is shocking to think that every year, thousands of people are murdered in South Africa: 17,068 in 2013/14 (1), an increase of 809 on the previous year. The majority of these murders occur in low-income areas and are not associated with pre-meditated acts or robbery but rather as a consequence of assaults (2).

In a nation where murder is such a regular occurrence, it is unsurprising that most of these never hit the news, because it is ‘just another murder’. Regardless of race or nationality, every family and community in South Africa affected by losing someone this way, faces irrevocable, devastating grief, but most of these go unreported. The only ones that really hit the news are those that either effect high-profile individuals or overseas tourists with sole nationality of another country.

In February 2014, during a robbery, Jeremy Brooke, my son, known affectionately as Gumby, a dual citizen of South Africa and the UK, was murdered. At the time of his death he was in fact, a tourist in the country, on a dive trip to the (aptly named) Wild Coast, with a multi-national group of tourists and friends.

It was not long after they had all gone to bed for the night, when five men broke into the house and held the group at gunpoint demanding phones and keys to the vehicle they were using. Gumby being the way he was, stood up to these people in an attempt to protect his friends and was deliberately held and shot.

He was hit in the face and chest and in the ensuing chaos and terror, lived long enough for the group to call for help, borrow a vehicle and try to get him to hospital, one and a half hours away. Gumby reassured them all that, while he didn’t want to die, he wasn’t scared of dying. His friends tried to hold his face together in an attempt to stop the air they were blowing into his mouth from escaping. He bled to death on the way to the hospital.

Tragically, life is so cheap in South Africa it seems that many perpetrators are never brought to justice and we understand that often, even when they are, the judicial process is not robust enough to end in conviction.

In Gumby’s case, because of the prompt action of the tour group leader, the police acted swiftly and impressively considering the remote area they were in at the time and within hours had arrested all five of the perpetrators. Since then, they have been positively identified, the evidence has all been gathered and remarkably, in a country where getting to trial can take up to three years, a trial date has been set for December this year. We can only pray that the outcome is ‘just’.

For those of us who loved Gumby we have lost a generous-hearted, free-spirit who loved nature and truly valued its gifts, sharing them with everyone he came into contact with and making them in turn a little more in touch with the amazing world around them. He made a remarkable impression on hundreds of people because he was a remarkable person and he will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched in ways that he probably could never have imagined.

BUT, he isn’t the only one. Every single life that is lost in South Africa through murder, whether by accident or design, leaves a gaping hole in the lives of those who knew and loved them. How can this be allowed to carry on?

No one in South Africa is safe or immune from crime and the life lasting effect it has on the people left behind. EVERYONE, including all tourists, are at risk, between 15 & 20% in 2012/13 (3). We lived on the edge of one of the most important World Heritage Sites – the Cradle of Humankind. This area is 49,000 hectares of privately owned land, much of it game farms and private resorts. Now, I understand (three years after we returned to live in the UK) that all hotels and venues in the area have extensive CCTV coverage on their properties, in an attempt to reassure potential visitors of their safety.

Tourism was always under threat, and now, in a nation struggling to build its identity where tourism could potentially make a significant difference to the people of South Africa, every murder diminishes the opportunity for the population to benefit and thrive. Even nature is not immune as is evident with the decimation of the rhino population and the horrific threat of wildlife extinction. Faced with the facts, it would appear that the value of life in South Africa in general, is not very high.

Our family has to wait now and hope that we will see justice done. But while we wait, I’m writing this to ask people to stop for a moment and think about what is happening here. To ask yourselves, each-other, your communities and politicians – can it go on?

How many more families and friends will have to face the loss of somebody they cherish and love for the want of a mobile phone and a vehicle, worth maybe only a hundred pounds?

‘What will it take for this to stop?’

Edited on 16 May 2015: the trial was postponed on numerous occasions since this letter was originally written but it has actually started this week. We have been warned that it may not be completed before the end of the year….

UK postman who retired to South Africa for a better life has been murdered as he moved house.
-

-
Robert Mandley, 66, was moving into a new flat in Johannesburg, on April 20, when it is thought that the men helping him to move house attacked him.

It is believed that as Mr Mandley tried to fight off one of the attackers, the other beat him on the head, causing injuries from which he died.

After killing Mr Mandley the attackers left with his wallet, mobile phone and other personal belongings.

One man has been arrested by South African authorities, and a second is being hunted by police. No one has yet been charged.
Mr Mandley, an army veteran who served in the Northern Ireland conflict, moved from Weedon to South Africa with his wife Valerie in 2008.

Sadly Valerie, a South African national, died from cancer six months later, but Mr Mandley made friends, and enjoyed spending time with her family.

His brother Chris, 59, who lives in Southcourt with his wife Thandi (also a South African national) was on holiday in Zimbabwe when he heard about his brother’s murder.

He said: “We have a house over there and usually use all of our holiday in one go. We arrived at the end of March, and he was murdered on April 20. So I took care of everything that end, and my sister took care of everything here in Aylesbury.”

Mr Mandley’s body arrived back in Aylesbury today (Thursday) and Bucks’ coroner will now schedule an inquest into his death.

Mr Mandley was born in Aylesbury in 1949 and attended Quarrendon School (now Aylesbury Vale Academy).

He joined the army in 1964 and was part of the local regiment the Royal Green Jackets.

During his time in service he was posted to Norway, Bermuda, Belize, Gibraltar and Northern Ireland where he witnessed the Bloody Sunday fighting.

After he left the army in 1976 he joined Hazells in Aylesbury as an adult apprentice bookbinder, and worked there until it closed.

Before he retired Mr Mandley was a postman, working out of Aylesbury sorting office on a round which covered the Cottesloe Road and Walton Court areas.

A lover of outdoor pursuits, he was a member of the Aylesbury Fly Fishing Club and loved attending the Bucks County Show.

One of five children he leaves behind brothers Chris, Nick and Don Mandley, and sisters Sheila Mandley and Dianne Ateem.

Chris added: “The older members of our family have all enjoyed a long life.

“For somebody in his later years of life, he had every right to expect them to be happy. All he was doing was moving house, he was a quiet man and kept himself to himself, and for something like this to happen to him is just terrible.”

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: “We can confirm the death of a British national in South Africa.

“We are providing the family with consular assistance at this sad time.”

A special tribute to Mr Mandley, which all of his siblings shared on Facebook read: “On April 20 2015 your life was cruelly taken away in the country that you had made your home for the past few years.

“Ever since we heard this terrible news, we have worked unceasingly to bring you back home as quickly as possible.

“Finally, you are in safe hands, and today you will start your long journey back to us so that we may say goodbye to you with all the love and respect you deserve.”

Chris said: “I would like to thank everyone who has helped us, The High Commission in Pretoria, Sara Morris HM Consul, Paresh Mistry our Consular Officer and Liason. And all the family and friends that rallied around in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

“I would like to thank the Victim Support Homicide Team, Cathy, Adele and Laura, they have been brilliant. We would rather that donations be made to them rather than buying flowers. Reg Charity No: 298028. www.victimsupport.org.uk.”

He added: “Also a special thanks for going the extra mile Neil at Thom Kight our Funeral Directors in South Africa and Duncan at Churchview Funeral Directors in Aylesbury, They were sympathetic and very helpful and made a logistical nightmare so so smooth.

“Without All their support we would still be in South Africa trying to pick our way through the system.”

A father and son have been accosted while cycling in yet another mugging at the Voortrekker monument.

This is the third such attack at the monument in two months and the fourth one in a nature reserve in Pretoria in recent months.

Riaan Botha and his 13-year-old son were cycling at the monument last Thursday. “Just before we reached the climb up to Fort Schanskop we were accosted by two men.”

Botha said the two demanded their bicycles. “When we refused, they started throwing rocks at us. In a bid to defend ourselves we did the same.”

During this altercation Botha was hit on the back of his head. “As I was trying to defend my son from the two attackers, one of them grabbed my mountain bike and made off with it. The other man followed him.”

Botha said he needed stitches for the wound at the back of his head and he and his son were still recovering from the trauma.

“My son has been to a psychologist to make sure that he will be okay, as the incident has been quite traumatic.”

Sonja Lombard, managing director of the Voortrekker monument, previously said the attackers were believed to be vagrants living on the north side of the reserve.

The previous attacks were all at remote sections of the reserve, this is the first so close to the monument.

Geraldine Paulsen of the Voortrekker monument said the matter had been reported to the police and plans had been made to stop the attacks.

“The police have said they are planning on clearing out the vagrants living in the reserve within the coming week. This will hopefully help stop any more attacks.

“In the mean time we urge everyone visiting the reserve to take the utmost precaution. Do not ride alone and keep a lookout for any suspicious behaviour,” said Paulsen.

A 19-year-old Danish girl and a 16-year-old Centurion boy was robbed, beaten and tied up at the monument on 27 March and 2 May respectively. Both were cycling on their mountain bikes at the time, and have since recovered.

An elderly couple was beaten, tied up and robbed in the nearby Groenkloof Nature Reserve on 6 May. Both survived the ordeal.

Home robbers beat and stab victim in President Park in terrifying ordeal
-
PRESIDENT PARK – A case of house robbery and assault has been opened at the Midrand Police Station after a man was attacked in his home in Kruger Street, President Park by two men.

Francois van Niekerk shortly after his assault
-
Francois van Niekerk, 26, and his girlfriend, 22, were still awake when their small dog started barking at 3am.

“At the time I didn’t think much of, I didn’t react,” Van Niekerk said.

“The suspects started to try hammer down the door to our house, I armed myself with a fragment of the door. I was trying to keep them out and they were trying to get in.”

Van Niekerk said he managed to push his couch in front of the door which acted as a barrier and made it difficult for the suspects to enter.

“They threatened to shoot me and were smashing all the windows. I tried to negotiate with them, but they persisted. They wanted to come inside.”
-
Image
he suspects smashed windows, and van Niekerk’s car windows during the ordeal.

Van Niekerk said the suspects would demand items, which he would pass to them through the broken door.

“They were armed with a wheel spanner and would strike me through the door. They started finding random objects, which they threw at me.”

Van Niekerk was taken to hospital after the ordeal and was treated for a large head wound, a deep gash in his arm, which needed five stitches, while the other arm received two stitches. He also had a cut on his lip which received seven stitches. “

“I have shallow gashes all over me,” he said.

Van Niekerk said his girlfriend was not injured during the ordeal, but was very traumatised. “We will be looking to move,” he said.

He said he had spotted the same suspects on his verandah some two weeks ago. “They got rattled and ran off when they saw me,” he explained.

Van Niekerk said the ordeal lasted about 20 minutes, and the suspects took a tablet, an iPhone and a cellphone.

Midrand Police spokesperson, Constable Matome Tlamela confirmed the incident and said the two suspects were armed with a wheel spanner and knife.

The suspects allegedly gained access to the property by cutting the electric fence.
