When sweet birds sing
To those who sleep
All night with open eyes
The song inspires
In their hearts
The desire to go
On Pilgrimages

Only a god can save us

Although some pilgrims have wandered continuously with no fixed destination, pilgrims more commonly seek a specific place that has been sanctified by association with a divinity or other holy personage. Given its presence as a means of sacred travel pilgrimage usually entails some separation from the everyday world of home and traversing to a space which draws them there for some special purpose. The institution of pilgrimage was very evident in ancient Greece, and it formed a core part of their relationship to their sacred figures. For the ancient Greeks Mount Olympus was not only the physical home of the gods on earth but also a symbol of divine power and, as such, was the ultimate destination for travelers from all over the Greek Mainland and is a focal point for understanding Greek spirituality; these journeys were undertaken by those searching for guidance and some kind of personal connection to the gods. The origins of religious practices in ancient Greece can be traced back to the early city-states, where gods and goddesses were worshipped in various forms. Rituals and offerings were common, and they often involved pilgrimages to sacred sites. Oracles, particularly the famous Oracle of Delphi, played a crucial role in divine communication. Pilgrims would travel great distances to seek prophecies and guidance from the gods, which often included visits to Mount Olympus or Delphi itself. On a personal level, the journey to Mount Olympus was often seen as a transformative experience. Many pilgrims reported feelings of enlightenment and deep spiritual connection upon reaching their destination, and at Delphi they were able to gain assistance in foretelling the future, to see which grain of life would grow and which would not.

In the movie Close Encounters Of The Third Kind the idea of pilgrimage is played out on a kind of cosmic scale. All around the world the imminent landing on earth of the alien craft is engendered as a psychic wave or psychic implant and in their dreams they can see what will happen at the site of the touch down; the protagonist has had a particularly virulent imprint and he becomes under compulsion to make models of an unknown mountain which he proceeds to replicate in various forms. When the strange drive he is possessed by reaches its strongest, like a kind of homing instinct which birds possess, for among birds they do not migrate with their parents but have an innate inward map of where it is that they should go, and when they find it is imprinted in their memory forever. When the main character sees the mountain on a news broadcast he recognizes it as the one that he has been inwardly homing or honing in on, that it is the one that has been formed for him in his mind’s eye; and so he begins right away his trek to what he considers his destiny, knowing without doubt that the government story about it being a toxic spill is a spurious one; and that what he, and others, have seen in dreams is what is really happening.

The song The Happening appeared on the Pixies’ acclaimed 1990 album Bossanova. Starting out aerially the song’s speaker refers to Area 51, the common name for a highly classified United States Air Force facility within the Nevada Test and Training Range which is a remote detachment administered by the Edwards Air Force Base in California; the facility is officially named Homey Airport or Groom Lake after the Salt Flat next to its airfield. Thunderous declarations warn us that the aliens are going to land the craft on the Strip; when they step outside they will, laconically, say: hi. The song then changes chord structure and goes into a kind of fugue dreamlike passage where the speaker reports what seems like a kind of homing signal is drawing him towards Las Vegas (the fertile fields); he is doing nothing driving along the Salt Lake when they put it on the air; that is a broadcast of some kind is going out over the frequencies; driving his car this broadcast on the air (coming through on either the Amy of the Army band, I have seen both lyrics) he goes into some sort of special lane and then gives in to this magnetic propulsion or compulsion: I forgot about myself and I forgot about all laws. The broadcast continues up on the “nine” when up across the road they were turning around heading south, so now there is an entire mass of people heading toward the site where the happening is occurring as if in a Pilgrimage. Everybody is said to be remembering that they forgot they had the chills, thus indicating that something eerie or uncanny is going on or about to go on; then more voices come on the air this time from up “on the bird” or craft which has landed on the Strip; whoever these figures are now being interviewed by a Good Man whose name is Bill (ie, Will). And so the speaker and the crowd continues on to Vegas where he says they are putting on a show, or a spectacle of some kind, and given that he’s come this far and has lived this long he is duty bound to appear on the site and say hello or give his salute or salutations: heil (see Celestial City, White Biocentrism, June 22 2024).

The Pixies song was Vegas Suite was published in October 2024 and serves as a kind of companion piece to The Happening, or a denouement following the climax. But notice now how there some is some doubt where the event will occur. Once more the speaker says he is going to Vegas but now him making it there is in doubt (if I don’t make it); and he says that if he doesn’t make it there’s lots of other places where whatever he is going to see can occur. He cryptically says that he had a two year run down in Henderson (see K And H, White Biocentrism, July 4 2024) and then he says that when you’ve done everything everything has been done (completion of acts); then he says that he was down in Needles and put one dollar three times for Revolution Number Nine; the chances of a juke box in Needles having a nine minute avant garde song comprising concrete music about the end of time is, to say the least, preposterous so he is quite obviously trafficking in symbolism, which is somewhere on the spectrum from being heavy handed to high handed. Pointed, I suppose you might say, so one gets the point. But even if one does not understand it does not mean it is not so.
