Mercerism is a strange religion in the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. It was founded by a man named Wilbur Mercer, who appears before his followers as an old, robed man climbing up a steep hill. Followers of Mercerism celebrate empathy by gripping the handles of an empathy box, allowing them to feel the emotions and sensations of other people. Both regulars and specials participate in a ritual called fusion, which involves empathy boxes and a mysterious figure named Mercer.

Mercerism centered around a martyr known as Wilbur Mercer. Together, followers – known as Mercerites – would fuse with Mercer through the use of an empathy box, during which they would experience Mercer's climb up a hill whilst he was endlessly pelted by stones. Such a fusion could cause actual injuries and in some cases, even death. In actuality, Mercerism was manufactured by an unknown party; Mercer's ascent was filmed on a soundstage. Mercer himself was played by Al Jarry, while the rocks hurled at him and injuries sustained were fake.

In this video Dick says that Jesus taught his disciples how to get to the real world, that is he told them a secret. Then Dick says that sadly this secret has been lost because "the Roman authorities crushed it." This is why dreamers only have a partial view of reality and why sober minded historians are needed. The Romans were just the errand boys, it was the Jews who sentenced Jesus to death (on a charge of blasphemy). Dick also says that that Ultimate Reality will be ruled by Jesus and his father (God). He neglects that this teaching has been taught by many people, and it's not a secret and it was never lost. For a public intellectual and man of his great stature to have gone from time and mind bending and electric dreams to a Sunday School sermon is a falling off indeed, and a paucity of imagination in a man who in many respects defines imagination.
Leaving aside his mistake that Jesus is the engine he has the model correct. Joseph Cambell said the hero has a thousand faces as Paul McCartney said the fool has a thousand voices as Hitler said the Reich (realm) will be a thousand years, millenarian fantasies abound. I'll sleep with you baby for a thousand years (David Bowie). Dick has the model correct, that the god will break through into time, some will see it first, but eventually all will see it, in fact it is already here, has always been here. But in the end the creator seeks and realizes completion and will simply land on earth and say hello (heil). Only the programmer (all hues in his controlling) prints out the real world and infuses it with reality, but eventually (sooner rather than later) all the pluriform worlds will be superimposed one on the other like a final version or palimpsest.
Notice how at 24:00 onwards Dick says that in is dream state in the world he inhabited all sacerdotal references to Jesus were forbidden and that that this banishment was resonant of a fascist state along "nazi lines." That is he has the truth but has it in the negative, when the film is exposed the inverse will happen, and things will turn inside out (and vice versa it goes without saying).
