Re: Savages Get Jew Money
The son of Jewish immigrants who operated a San Antonio used tire shop, Gochman built a legal practice that specialized in civil rights cases. His Houston business career — launched in midlife — culminated in the creation of Academy Sports + Outdoors, which has 125 stores in 11 states.
In a 2008 op-ed article in the Houston Chronicle, Gochman detailed perhaps his first venture in social activism — a decision at age 14 to accompany an African-American friend to a San Antonio amusement park despite segregation laws. In a wry reversal of racial norms of the day, Gochman broke the law by visiting the park on the historic Juneteenth holiday, when the park was reserved for African-Americans.

Bard College in New York’s Dutchess County is using a $50 million endowment to broaden its work in Native American and Indigenous Studies. A $25 million gift from the Gochman Family Foundation and a matching $25 million commitment from the Open Society Foundations will fund scholarships for Native American and Indigenous students as well as faculty positions and programming. Bard College’s American Studies Program will also be renamed American and Indigenous Studies.

Bard College has announced that it has received a $25 million endowment gift from the Gochman Family Foundation, which will be used to form a Center for American and Indigenous Studies, add new faculty appointments, boost student scholarships, and appoint an Indigenous Curatorial Fellow at its Center for Curatorial Studies.
Bard, a private liberal arts college located in the Hudson River Valley about 90 miles of New York City, will develop the initiative in partnership with the Forge Project, a program devoted to indigenous art and co-founded by Becky Gochman. The Gochman Family Foundation support will be matched by an additional commitment of $25 million from George Soros and the Open Society Foundations.
