1654: Italian physician, epidemiologist, and anatomist Giovanni Maria Lancisi is born in Rome. He obtained his M.D. at age 17, carried out extensive anatomical and physiological studies, was the first to make the connection between malaria and the presence of mosquitoes, and is considered the first modern hygienist.
