TODAY IN HISTORY
1967: Black riots and looting begin in Newark, New Jersey, just a few years after Blacks became the majority there, ostensibly over an arrest of a Black man. That Newark was the first American city to hire Black officers made no difference in the predictable result. Twenty-six are killed and hundreds are injured, and the city — blighted, filthy, and dangerous — never recovers.
