1820: A Russian expedition led by Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen and Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev discovers the Antarctic continent, approaching the Antarctic coast.

Something I find interesting is that humans first saw the south polar icecap of Mars centuries before any human first sighted Antarctica. In fact, I myself have seen the south polar icecap of Mars with my own eyes from my back yard, but I have only seen Antarctica in photographs.
