TODAY IN HISTORY
1906: American astronomer Fred Whipple is born in Red Oak, Iowa. He would discover numerous asteroids and comets, become a pioneer in cometary composition theory, and design the Whipple Shield, an impact shield used to protect spacecraft from collisions with micrometeoroids and orbital debris.
