1600: Euridice, the earliest surviving opera, receives its première performance in Florence, Italy, beginning what is now known as the Baroque period. Its composer Jacopo Peri wrote an even earlier opera, Dafne, which is now lost. Peri, an admirer of the art of the pre-Christian Classical period of European art, based the opera on the Greek myth of Euridice, the wife of the legendary musician Orpheus, who tried to bring her back from the dead with his enchanting music.
