TODAY IN HISTORY
1939: With the initiation of the program Germany Calling and the soon to become familiar announcement “”Germany calling! Here are the Reichssender Hamburg, station Bremen,” National Socialist Germany begins transmitting on shortwave radio to the United States and Great Britain. The German facilities were very advanced, using high fidelity magnetic tape recording, extremely high quality condenser microphones, and wideband audio studio-to-transmitter links years before these were used anywhere else in the world. One of the features of the German station was a program of messages from UK and US POWs directly to their families at home.
