TODAY IN HISTORY
1944: 450 American and British heavy bombers escorted by 150 fighters attacked the city center of Sofia, Bulgaria, targeting no military targets, only civilians and the historical heart of the city, destroying 3,575 buildings. Over 3,000 high explosive bombs and 30,000 incendiary bombs were used. The Bulgarians’ crime? Wanting a country of their own, not under Jewish/Communist control.
