1077: German King and "Holy Roman Emperor" Henry IV is absolved of excommunication by Pope Gregory VII after his penitent "Walk to Canossa," which involved begging for the Pope's favor by kneeling for three days and nights in a snowstorm before the gate of the castle where the Pope was staying.
