1919: The Versailles peace conference opens to draw up the treaties formally ending World War 1. The resulting "peace" terms cause economic destruction and mass starvation in Germany. The image, from a German magazine in 1919, shows a mother speaking to her starving child: "When we have paid 100 billion marks, then I can give you something to eat."
