1924: Leopold (a Jew) and Loeb (a half-Jew) murder a teenage boy, a fellow secular Jew, in what was perhaps the first documented "thrill killing" in the United States. Brilliant defense attorney Clarence Darrow, hired at a huge fee, argued that the two, who had confessed, had been influenced by their "reading of Nietzsche" and should not be put to death because, among other reasons, they had suffered from "childhood neglect." Loeb died in prison; Leopold was released on parole in 1958 at the age of 54.
