TODAY IN HISTORY
1519: Ferdinand Magellan’s five ships set sail from Seville to circumnavigate the globe. His second-in-command, Juan Sebastián Elcano, will complete the expedition after Magellan’s death in the Philippines. Magellan was reported to have said, “The church says the earth is flat; but I have seen its shadow on the moon, and I have more confidence even in a shadow than in the church.”
