Werner Heisenberg
1901: Werner Heisenberg, the great German physicist and pioneer of quantum mechanics, discoverer of what is now called the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, is born in Würzburg, Germany. After clashes with government officials which were eventually resolved, he would work on atomic power and weapons research for National Socialist Germany. In 1944 a US spy, a Jew named Moe Berg, was sent to murder Heisenberg at a lecture in Zurich but failed to do so, the cover story now given being that Germany's research had not progressed enough to make the murder "necessary."
