With its elements of mysterious disappearances, murder, transvestism and a family feud within one of New York's wealthiest families, the story of Robert Durst is one of those New York sagas that could have been penned by the late Dominick Dunne. Born into one of the wealthiest and most powerful of New York real estate families, Durst was traumatized at the age of six when he was said to have witnessed the suicide of his mother. Years of counseling followed, with some doctors believing that Durst suffered from schizophrenia. Then as a young man in the early 1970s, he turned away from his family, led by his powerful father Seymour, to move to Vermont with Kathleen (or Kathy), his young bride - a suburban medical student with whom he had a whirlwind courtship - to run a health food store (called All Good Things). His idyl didn't last long, pressured by his father he returned to New York and work in the family business.

His job? Collecting the rents from the family's Times Square holdings - mostly SRO hotels that the police had under surveillance for being bordellos. While Robert was doing this, his father was chosen by then Mayor to head a team to clean-up Times Square. In a short time, Robert's psychological problems emerged - moody, arrogant, easily enraged and abusive. After nearly a decade, Kathy wanted a divorce; but Robert wouldn't agree. Then one day in 1982 while visiting their second home in Westchester County, Kathy disappeared. 18 years pass, Jeanine Pirro, an ambitious Westchester County DA, reopens the case of Kathy's disappearance. Fearing being investigated, Durst went into hiding in Galveston, Texas where he took the identity of a mute woman living in a rooming house. There he was befriended by a neighbor, Morris Black, whose body turns up in pieces in the Atlantic sometime later. Durst is tried for the murder. Meanwhile Susan Berman, Durst's long-time friend and the DA's prime witness in Kathy's disappearance, turned up murdered in LA. Though acquitted of murder in the Black case (claiming self-defense), he served prison time in Texas for lesser charges.

A New York multimillionaire is guilty of dropping his pants and peeing on a candy aisle in a CVS pharmacy.

This isn't 71-year-old Robert Durst's first bizarre accusation, or his most shocking. Durst, who comes from a line of wealthy family members who own real estate in Manhattan, pleaded no contest on Tuesday to a charge of criminal mischief after urinating on candy at a Houston, Texas pharmacy, Click2Houston reported.

The July incident caused about $100 worth of wasted candy. More from the New York Post:

“He picked up his prescription, and he then exposes himself and pees all over the cash register and candy at the register and then walks out and walks down the street,” Houston police spokeswoman Jodi Silva told The Post.
“He wasn’t arguing with anybody and he didn’t seem agitated,” Silva said, adding she did not know what the prescription was for. “He just peed on the candy. Skittles, I think.”
The crime is tame in comparison to other accusations that have hung over his head throughout the years. In 1982, Durst was a suspect in the disappearance of his first wife, Kathie. Durst waited several days before reporting her missing, and friends of the woman said he was physically abusive, according to KHOU.

In 2003, Durst successfully claimed self-defense in the killing of 71-year-old Morris Black. The millionaire admitted to killing the man, chopping his body into pieces, beheading the man, and dumping the remains into Galveston Bay in Texas. The killing prompted a 45-day manhunt before police found the suspect in a Pennsylvania supermarket, attempting to steal just a single Band-Aid and a chicken sandwich, according to the New York Times.

In the final episode of “The Jinx,” the HBO documentary directed by Andrew Jarecki, Durst appears to walk into a bathroom during an interview and confess to the crime while talking to himself, apparently unaware that the microphone he was wearing was still recording.

“What the hell did I do,” Durst whispered. “Killed them all, of course.”

This crazy, wealthy Jew will use the insanity defense and be locked away in the nuthouse where he has belonged for a long time.
