My first friends in this world were a girl and boy,
brother and sister living next door with one wonderful toy:
a light-blue pool where we swam every slow-cooked summer day
then sat like happy clams on the edge of my sunbaked driveway.
Their Mom read books on a shaded chair, keeping guard;
we tried to play soldier and sneak underneath--too hard!
She gave us dragon-breath looks as if she might explode
so we marched on to swim, crabwalk and whisper in kid-code
drying bodies and secrets under a fun-drenched sky
as spying pirate clouds winked and grinned sailing by.
If we stared long enough puffy-cheeked clown faces
mimed hello and goodbye, eye-smiling us in our cooler places.
