Our people's medicine.

Post by Richard_G_603 » Mon Mar 21, 2022 11:01 pm

Went out foraging today for some remnants of last year's mushroom crop, particularly the "birch polypore".
For those who don't know this is quite the worthwhile endeavor as it is one of the oldest medicines used by Europeans, with proof of its use being found 5300 years ago in Otzi the Iceman from the Swiss alps.
It's antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic for stomach bugs, and anticancer for the gastrointestinal tract; and is also supposed to be a good coagulation when put over minor cuts.
It's use was so common it was almost foraged to extinction in Eastern Europe.

Best used dried and made into teas and tinctures when one isn't feeling well l, daily use might be harsh on your digestive tracts microbiome.

Are these found in North America or just Europe?

It's a great mushroom for nearly anyone to look for since it's very low risk. It only grows on birches, and there is basically no look alike that grows on birches.

In a few weeks or so, time permitting, I'll be looking for these:
To be sauteed, of course.

While out and about, I'll keep an eye open for some of these birch polypores as well.

The birch polypores come out later in the year, the one out now will be from last year, but if you find old ones now, you are garunteed to have fresh ones there later!

Any tips for Morrell hunting?

Thanks for posting. I have been a student of herbal and alternative medicine for many years. I look forward to many discussions about our people's health care.
