The wilderness has a mysterious tongue,
of this there is no doubt;
the task for any and every curious one
is how to figure it out.
Four elements are quartered by sun-coated leaf
devoted to encoding life's natural modes, in brief:
of water--how it beads, runs, leaps, drips;
earth--home to root and seed dirt-eclipsed;
fire--inspiring beams bridge moon-sired higher seeing;
air--unseen ocean force connects kin forest with fluid being.
Wordsmith leaves red, yellow or green converse in signs
heard by the discerning rural eye,
burned to terms simplified as letter and line
in mason jar and hardcore heart refined.
When understood each message from native wood
ill or good
fills blood-scored minds with boundless joy
distilling mountain growl, wild wolf howl,
swooping owl,
bat-cloud shriek trailing what they seek
and grass-crowned, shale-faced murmuring creek
to background noise.
