H.L. Mencken's _The American Language_

Post by Will Williams » Sun Jan 01, 2017 6:38 pm

First published in 1919 The American Language is a wonderful reference for the origin of words and phrases.

For example, "The English use wog for a native of India, and it has been extended to indicate any native of the Red Sea and Indian Ocean country. It was borrowed by the American troops serving in Egypt during World War II, from the argot* of the British troops. It is supposed to be an abbreviation of wily oriental gentleman. (Page 389)

*The word argot means the vocabulary special to any group, trade or profession. (Page 703)
