Minnesota National Guard investigating Chaska recruit's ties to white supremacist group
Chaska guardsman recalled after online chats go public.
By Matt DeLong Star Tribune APRIL 30, 2019 — 11:47AM

A 19-year-old Chaska man has been recalled from basic training as the Minnesota National Guard investigates his ties to a nationwide white {sic} supremacist organization.

He is the latest in a string of current servicemen whose affiliations with the supremacist group were uncovered following the leak of internet chat logs in March.

Days after joining the Minnesota National Guard in January, the Chaska man logged in to a chat room to discuss his future military career with a group of online friends scattered across the country.

The former Normandale Community College student told them he was optimistic about entering a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program after boot camp. Because he graduated high school in 2018 with an associate degree, the man told a Montana ROTC cadet he expected to rise through the ranks quickly.

Screengrab of the Chaska man's messages in an Identity Evropa-linked Discord chat room released by Unicorn Riot.
Those conversations would have been innocuous enough, except the private chat room on Discord — an app for gamers that far-right groups have used for covert communication — was affiliated with Identity Evropa, a white {sic} supremacist, anti-immigration group that played a key role in planning the deadly 2017 “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Va.

The 19-year-old’s posts were found among hundreds of thousands of messages between Identity Evropa members released in March by the left-wing media collective Unicorn Riot.

The Star Tribune identified the Chaska man by following a trail of public records and profiles found in popular online gathering places for white nationalists. He is not being named because the Guard has not concluded its investigation and he has not been charged with a crime.

Identity Evropa, which changed its name to American Identity Movement after the Discord leak, has maintained a presence in Minnesota since at least early 2017, though much of its activity has been limited to hanging posters and banners or dropping fliers at college campuses and coffee shops.

In December 2017, the group placed a memorial for Justine Ruszczyk Damond, a dual Australian-U.S. citizen killed by a Somali-American police officer, outside a Minneapolis police precinct. The chat logs include numerous messages exhorting members to contact media organizations to generate coverage of the memorial, while leaders closely tracked their success.

When the shrine was removed, the Chaska man and two other local Identity Evropa members placed another one at Minneapolis City Hall.

Recruit under investigation

Minnesota National Guard spokesman Maj. Scott Hawks said the man holds the rank of private and attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, an Army base in Missouri.

After the Star Tribune asked the Guard about the man’s involvement with Identity Evropa, Hawks said the recruit was recalled to Minnesota on April 4 and is now under investigation.

Reached by telephone in April, the Chaska man denied being affiliated with Identity Evropa, though he acknowledged having a Discord account. He was unsure of his status in the Minnesota National Guard but declined to say more. Some of his online profiles were altered or removed after he returned to Minnesota.

Every branch of the U.S. military bars current service members from participating in extremist groups or activities. The definition found in the U.S. Army Commander’s Equal Opportunity Handbook includes groups that “advocate racial, gender, or ethnic hatred or intolerance.”

“The Minnesota National Guard is an organization that encourages diversity and inclusion,” Hawks said. “Attitudes that would be opposing to that would not be welcome in our organization.”

In an Identity Evropa-linked chat room called “Nice Respectable People Group,” the Chaska man adopted an avatar of a Canadian fascist leader as he wrote using the name “Hyphenstein.” He discussed placing leaflets with the slogan “Protect Your Heritage” around his college campus and made sure he kept his membership dues current.

On Memorial Day last year, Hyphenstein and another user shared photos of an Identity Evropa display in Richfield’s Veterans Memorial Park.

Among his 30 messages posted sporadically in the channel over 16 months was a meme imagining Identity Evropa and its baby-faced leader, Patrick Casey, “had run the globalists out of DC, all the way back to Israel.”

The Chaska man told his associates he was excited to attend Identity Evropa’s November 2018 “Defend the Rockies!” anti-immigration rally in Denver. He asked the group to wish him well as he embarked on the “long drive to Colorado.”

Hyphenstein’s final post in the channel — dated Feb. 24, more than a month after the man enlisted — marked his “last day in Minnesota before army basic training” as he lamented missing “Leading Our People Forward,” a national Identity Evropa conference in Kentucky.

Founded in 2016 by a former Marine, Identity Evropa consists mostly of young men who share an ideology based on white identity. Its members advocate ending immigration to the U.S. and oppose efforts to promote diversity, in order to prevent what Casey described at the Denver rally as the “demographic dispossession” of white {sic} people.

“They believe the way of making America great again is to make America white again,” said Lisa Waldner, a sociology professor at the University of St. Thomas who studies right-wing movements, noting that there has been a long history of white supremacist organizations attempting to recruit from or infiltrate the military.

While its members prefer to call themselves “identitarians,” Identity Evropa is considered a white supremacist group by the Anti-Defamation League and listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Identity Evropa was among the organizers of the August 2017 far-right gathering in Charlottesville, where a neo-Nazi drove a car into a crowd, killing a counterprotester and injuring 28. When hundreds of tiki torch-wielding white nationalists marched through the streets, some chanted “Jews will not replace us” — a play on a slogan popularized by Identity Evropa, “You will not replace us.”

HuffPost recently identified seven other servicemen with ties to the group, citing information contained in the chat logs. All the men are under investigation. The Montana ROTC cadet who corresponded with the Chaska man resigned after the report, according to the Kalispell, Mont., Daily Inter Lake.

HuffPost on Saturday named three additional servicemen it said had ties to Identity Evropa.

Nearly one in four troops have encountered white nationalism in the service, a 2017 Military Times poll found.

“We generally mirror society, good and bad,” said Maj. Ross Niebur, executive officer of the Minnesota National Guard’s Recruitment and Retention Battalion. He added that he doesn’t believe extremism is more prevalent in the military than in other communities.

“We force people to be team players, because you fail if you don’t embrace being part of the team,” Niebur said.

In Virginia, a police officer assigned to a high school was fired this month after being outed by anti-fascists as an Identity Evropa organizer, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported.

An extensive footprint

Like many young adults, the 19-year-old Chaska man has an extensive online footprint. He maintained profiles on a number of sites frequented by members of the far right.

On the video game platform Steam, he again used the moniker “Hyphenstein” and listed his full name and home state of Minnesota on his profile. His avatar was a photo of Reinhard Heydrich, a Nazi officer who was a chief architect of the Holocaust.

The Chaska man logged in on Feb. 23, a day before he announced his imminent departure from Minnesota in the Discord logs. He did not sign in again until April 8, when the account was altered to remove his name and the Nazi references. Similar profile names and photos linked to the man were found on Twitter, Reddit and Instagram.

At the northeast Minneapolis Armory, home to the Guard’s Recruitment and Retention Battalion, recruiting manager Sgt. Maj. Shawn Kor, along with Niebur and Hawks, reviewed the recruit’s Standard Form 86, a security clearance background questionnaire. Kor said the Chaska man was required to divulge his affiliation with Identity Evropa at multiple points during the recruitment process but never did.

The recruit would have been asked about ties to extremist groups again during his final pre-enlistment interview, Kor said.

After signing off on the interview, recruits are fingerprinted and subjected to local and national background checks that look for evidence of potential criminal activity and associations. He does not have a criminal record.

“This individual’s check came back just fine,” Kor said.

They’re Back: White Supremacy Hate Posters
April 29, 2019 Administrator News

GRUGAN TOWNSHIP – A new set of white supremacy signs have appeared on a utility pole along Route 120 between Lock Haven and Renovo. The posters were at the same location as an earlier set earlier in the month, in Grugan Township at the base of the Ritchie Cut. Again, no one to this point has claimed responsibility for the posters.

The newest posters carry a www.anp14.com website, home to the American Nazi Party, a white supremacy group founded by the late George Lincoln Rockwell in 1959.

The posters put up earlier in the month had been removed shortly after they were observed by passers-by.

John A. Logan College bans man who placed racist flyers on campus

CARBONDALE — A man has been banned from the campus of John A. Logan College after surveillance video showed him placing white supremacist flyers on cars in the parking lot.

Less than 100 flyers from a white nationalist group known as The Creativity Alliance or the Church of Creativity showed up on windshields at the college last September.

Flyers from the same organization, bearing the same white supremacist messages, were again left on cars at JALC in early April.

Surveillance footage of that incident clearly showed the individual responsible and the license plate of his vehicle, college legal counsel Rhett Barke indicated at a JALC Board of Trustees meeting in late April.

The alleged culprit, who both the college and Williamson County Sheriff Bennie Vick declined to publicly identify, is believed responsible for both incidents at JALC, said college President Ron House.

“As soon as we gained enough information to ascertain who this individual was, we drafted a ban notice that was executed by President House and delivered by the Sheriff of Williamson County,” Barke said. “The notice stated that the individual is not permitted on campus either here in Carterville or on any of the satellite campuses in Du Quoin or West Frankfort.”

Officially, the man’s ban arose from a prohibition on flyering. According to Barke, college policy doesn’t allow for the distribution of materials on vehicles, and the violation was deemed to be a disturbance to the school’s educational environment.

Leaders of the college have also come forward to condemn the white supremacist messages the flyers contained.

“It reflects nothing about who we are,” House said. “It goes totally against the grain of what we believe.”

The same racist flyers were found on the Southeastern Illinois College campus in January.

“I can’t speak for anyone but myself, but from the description of the vehicle reported at Southeastern, I would say it’s the same guy,” House said. “When we complete our investigation, which is ongoing, I have already communicated orally with the president there that we’d be happy to share what we’ve got.”

House could not provide details about the ongoing investigation, but said “there are a lot of people from different agencies that are extremely interested in what’s going on.”

The letter announcing the ban was served to a residence in Williamson County, Sheriff Vick confirmed.

The banned individual was neither an employee nor a student at John A. Logan College.
Banning free speech and proclaiming that expressions of free speech "..goes totally against the grain of what we believe.” on a publicly funded institution of higher learning shows that this particular college has officials acting in bad faith towards all who attend that institution to experience all sides of any issue. Not to mention violating the rights of the person banned...

This is exactly what I was talking about. I wonder if the flyers had been advertising for a local pizza place if they would have invoked the no leafleting law? We have already seen cases where that was exactly the situation, that they only enforce the law on material they find objectionable.

I can get a bunch of pizza flyers/coupons if anyone wants to make a trip to Carbondale Illinois to find out!

I'd rather see NA materials distributed instead, that would be more worthwhile by far. One would have to beware of their cameras now that they've tipped their hand as to how activists are identified.

Alt-right to release 'avalanche' of election campaign propaganda to help Fraser Anning
Background Briefing Exclusive by Alex Mann and Benjamin Sveen
Updated 18 Apr 2019, 1:25am

Leaked messages have revealed the Australian alt-right's secret plan to use Queensland senator Fraser Anning to expand its extreme agenda in the Australian Parliament and beyond.

The texts, seen by Background Briefing, offer a rare insight into the strategy the movement intends to use to further its goals and spread its ideology.

Members of the group are seen discussing plans for confrontational racist stunts to be performed during the current federal election campaign.

The proposed stunts, designed to attract global attention and help Senator Anning get re-elected, include performing in "blackface and other taboos" and "burning the Koran".

Another stated goal is "obtaining and accessing a giant email and SMS database" in order to send messages that are "extremely right-wing".

Background Briefing has uncovered the alt-right's secret plan to return Fraser Anning to the Senate.

Andrew Wilson, who has a long history with Australia's white nationalist movement, is one of the men identified in conversations.

In one message, Mr Wilson claims to be working for Senator Anning as an online content producer.

He also states he is recruiting members for his fledgling Conservative National Party, which Senator Anning denies.

The party is just the latest organisation to be targeted by a group of white nationalists with a long track record of covertly infiltrating politics and institutions to gain access to their platform and assets.

Racist fliers, graffiti posted at Cal Poly after protests over blackface

Cal Poly racial difference flyer.jpg (55.02 KiB) Viewed 3548 times
A new round of hate hit Cal Poly this week after a professor posted on Facebook that he found racist fliers, graffiti and vandalism posted in university buildings Tuesday morning — the latest in a string of racist and racially insensitive incidents to occur on campus in recent weeks.

Professor Neal MacDougall — who teaches in the agribusiness department of the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Service — posted a collection of seven photos.

They depict slashed posters and signs, as well as multiple fliers that incorrectly claim that black people are a different species than Caucasian people. One photo depicts the racist slur "n-----" written on a bathroom stall.

Commenters on the post said the fliers were found in the English and Faculty Offices East buildings.

The vandalism, graffiti and fliers come just a week after the posting online of several photos depicting one fraternity member wearing blackface and several other fraternity members appeared in photos engaging in racial and cultural appropriation in a manner derogatory toward Hispanic and Latino people.

MacDougall told The Tribune that he learned of the bathroom graffiti when he noticed a university police officer standing outside the bathroom in his building. He said another professor later provided him with a photo of the graffiti, which university staff removed.

MacDougall believes that whoever was behind the vandalism and fliers likely entered the building early Tuesday morning.

MacDougall said he called the police to report the fliers, but he later was told an officer wasn't coming and to just take the fliers down.

In an interview on public radio station KCBX, MacDougall said he didn't believe the vandalism or fliers targeted him specifically.

"I was targeted as someone who has outwardly supported undocumented students and supported inclusion," he said.

He called himself a bit of a "fish out of water" in the College of Agriculture for his progressive viewpoints.

"I think it's really the slashing of the sign that disturbed me; that's fundamentally a violent act," he said.

MacDougall told The Tribune he was motivated to post the images on Facebook, and later to make the post publicly viewable, because he felt it was the only way to get the word out. He said Cal Poly seems to be more concerned about maintaining its U.S. News & World Report ranking and selling merchandise than with reckoning with on-campus racism.

"I really think that they're trying to protect the brand," he said. "Everything seems to be soft-pedaled."

Cal Poly spokesman Matt Lazier wrote in an email that "the university is seeing many postings around campus, expressing a wide variety of viewpoints — some of which include hateful and racist comments."

Lazier called them the "desperate acts of a few who aim to spread hate and divide our community" and wrote that Cal Poly "abhors and denounces hateful and racist speech and actions."

Lazier said that any actions found to contain threats of violence, criminal or severe harassment or defamation, "will result in discipline from the university up to and including expulsion/termination, and potentially criminal charges if criminal laws have been violated."
Good questions, why doesn't anyone answer them?

Fourth “Its okay to be white” {sic} sticker found; no University policy promises made

Pranav Baskar, Assistant Campus Editor
May 1, 2019

A fourth “It’s okay to Be white” {sic} sticker was found placed in a student’s laptop sleeve in The Garage, according to a Wednesday University release.

The racist sticker was found by a student who had worked in the incubator that afternoon, the release said. The student reportedly forgot his laptop sleeve when he left The Garage at about 4:30 p.m., and when he came back to retrieve it — around 8:15 p.m. — he found the sticker inside.

The discovery of the sticker marks the latest update in a string of racist incidents that have recently unfolded across campus. Three messages displaying the same phrase, associated with white {sic} supremacists and hate groups, have been found recently.

The University’s statement condemning the act was posted on Northwestern Now one day after the initial discovery of the sticker — a notable contrast to the relative slowness with which officials responded to previous acts of racial hatred on campus. Still, the update has yet to be publicized via email. Recently, administrators have been criticized by students for failing to respond adequately to racism on campus.

“Northwestern strongly condemns such messages,” the release said. “We take such incidents seriously, and will investigate thoroughly.”

Despite promises to investigate individual instances of racism, the University has yet to put forward substantive policy reforms to make the campus environment systematically safer for racial minorities. Beyond condemnations, the University promised no specific change in the release.

Investigate free speech? Why, is that now a crime in a university setting where all thoughts, opinions, and facts are open for discussion and debate? From what is there a "safety" issue anyway....a thought?

Drone-dropped swastika leaflets calling press ‘the enemy’ target Sacramento State, Ariana Grande concert
BY NOEL HARRIS
MAY 03, 2019 07:38 PM, UPDATED MAY 04, 2019 03:32 PM

People attending an annual event at Sacramento State University celebrating the city’s Farm-to-Fork roots were bombarded with material taking aim at the press. Some had images of a swastika on them.

A drone flew over the sold-out “Bites on the Bridge” event Friday and dropped leaflets which call the press “the enemy” and urged readers to “stop the TV whore takeover!” Some of the leaflets have the name Tracy Mapes in the corner with a copyright symbol and the year 2018 on them. According to previous reporting in The Sacramento Bee, Mapes is a Sacramento resident who has been arrested over dropping leaflets at sporting events.

Sacramento State quickly issued a statement from President Robert S. Nelsen via Facebook.

“Sacramento State condemns in the strongest terms the dissemination of hate speech and propaganda Friday evening at our annual fundraising dinner on the Guy West Bridge,” the statement reads. “The anonymous act of spreading such vile material is offensive and runs counter to the principles of inclusion and diversity practiced at Sac State. It did not stop the event, nor will it slow our march toward greater understanding and commitment to the rights and safety of our campus community.”

Despite the incident, the event continued as planned, according to Brian Blomster, Sacramento State director of news and communications. He added that campus police had been notified and plan to investigate.

The springtime fundraiser, held on the Guy West Bridge near campus, gives attendees a chance to enjoy small plates and desserts. The food is made and served by Sacramento State students.

According to tweets, the leaflets were also dropped Friday evening at Golden 1 Center, which is where an Ariana Grande concert is taking place, and were seen near the state Capitol.

The Bee reported in 2017 that Mapes was arrested after flying a drone over a San Francisco 49ers game in Santa Clara. Police said Mapes dropped leaflets that addressed free speech and railed against television news stations. According to the 2017 report, Mapes also planned to drop the leaflets at an Oakland Raiders game.
Another university president eschewing his duty to foster a welcoming place for free speech, diversity of thought, and an earnest search for truth from all perspectives. And they want to sic the cops on anyone who has an opinion or fact that's not in accord with that of their Cult of Diversity.

Higher education? Hardly. Forceful programming of the human mind towards White genocide? Definitely.

Great idea for the impersonal distribution of materials over a crowd of Whites.
