What Would Happen If Extinction Asteroid Struck Luna?

John Cate, studied at Strayer University
Answered on May 4th...

This may have actually happened in historical times.
In the year 1178, five English monks were observing
the Moon when something bizarre happened:

"From the midpoint of the division a flaming torch sprang
up, spewing out, over a considerable distance, fire, hot
coals and sparks. Meanwhile the body of the Moon which was
below writhed, as it were in anxiety, and to put it in the
words of those who reported it to me and saw it with their
own eyes, the Moon throbbed like a wounded snake. Afterwards
it resumed its proper state. This phenomenon was repeated
a dozen times or more, the flame assuming various twisting
shapes at random and then returning to normal. Then, after
these transformations, the Moon from horn to horn, that is
along its whole length, took on a blackish appearance."

This was reported by the chronicler of the Abbot of Canterbury
to have taken place on 18 June 1178. Based on the description
and the location on the moon this likely would have occurred
at, many scientists believe this is an account of a large
asteroid striking the Moon and creating the Giordano Bruno
crater—the only major crater on the Moon’s surface new enough
to have been created in historical times.

If this is indeed what they observed, then nothing happened
to Earth. Many scientists actually reject the Giordano Bruno
explanation, because there was no meteor shower reported by
medieval astronomers anywhere in the world in June 1178—and
it’s extremely likely that some of the impact debris would
have been blasted toward Earth, enough for a major shower.
The Chinese, in particular, were very diligent about observing
the skies, as were some of the learned men in the Islamic
Caliphate’s capital of Baghdad. Just three years later, a
bright supernova appeared in the skies, and we have voluminous
accounts of it from both China and Japan.

If the event of 1178 was the creation of the Giordano Bruno
crater, then it seems that the Moon is far away enough that
a large asteroid strike may not affect the Earth at all, at
least under certain conditions. Even if it wasn’t, most
scientists believe that all that would happen would be that
some of the debris would enter the Earth’s atmosphere and
create a spectacular meteor shower for a few days. The real
danger, of course, is if a large bolide struck the Earth itself.

Finding Snoopy!

THE MISSION TO FIND THE MISSING LUNAR MODULE

Article Updated: 24 Dec, 2015:

Where is the Apollo 10 Lunar lander module? It’s somewhere out there
— orbiting the Sun — and there’s a new initiative to try and find it!
The Apollo 10 mission launched on May 18, 1968 and was a manned “dry
run” for its successor Apollo 11, testing all of the procedures and
components of a Moon landing without actually landing on the Moon itself.
After carrying out a successful lunar orbit and docking procedure, the
Lunar Module (called “Snoopy”) was jettisoned and sent into an orbit
around the Sun. After 42 years, it’s believed to still be in a
heliocentric orbit and a team of UK and international astronomers
working with schools are going to try and find it. The idea is the
brainchild of British amateur astronomer Nick Howes who helped
coordinate a very successful asteroid and comet project with schools
and Faulkes Telescope during this past summer.

After consulting with people from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and
other orbital dynamics experts, the Howes has assembled a team of
facilities and experts, including the Faulkes Telescope, Space
Exploration Engineering Corp, astronomers from the Remanzacco
Observatory in Italy and schools across the UK. They know they
have a massive undertaking ahead of them to find Snoopy. “The key
problem which we are taking on is a lack of solid orbital data since
1969,” Howes told Universe Today. “We’ve enlisted the help of the
Space Exploration Engineering Corp who have calculated orbits for
Apollo 10 and working closely with people who were on the Apollo
mission team in the era will help us identify search coordinate regions.”

“We’re expecting a search arc anywhere up to 135 million kilometres in
size which is a huge amount of space to look at, ” Howes continued.
“We’re aware of the scale and magnitude of this challenge but to have
the twin Faulkes scopes assist the hunt, along with schools, plus the
fact that we’ll doubtless turn up many new finds such as comets and
asteroids makes this a great science project too. We’re also encouraging
anyone to have a go as we’ll be posting the coordinates on to the Faulkes
Telescope website starting in a few days.” While the challenge ahead of
Howes and the team is enormous, and the chances of the team finding Snoopy
are very small, the team are enthusing thousands of people with their own
“Apollo Mission” – the mission to find the missing Apollo Lunar module!

'Whitey on the Moon'

Race, Politics, and the death of the U.S. Space Program, 1958 - 1972 Kindle Edition
by Paul Kersey (Author):

We went to the moon. This is a fact. Indisputable, except to those conspiracy
theorists clinging to their belief some sinister plot was hatched by the US
Government to conceal our inability to navigate to Earth's natural satellite.
On July 20, 1969, man first stood on the Moon; on December 18, 1972, man stood
on the Moon for the last time. What happened to end the dream of space exploration,
left instead to the colorful imagination of Trekkies and science fiction fans
believing some diverse band of humans could navigate the heavens in a Utopian future?
The US Government neutered NASA by forcing a much different mission upon the space
agency: diversity and the promotion of Blacks. We went to the Moon.

On multiple occasions. When NASA was nearly all-White, with an all-White astronaut
team. But in 1972, the Apollo program was grounded, with the Space Shuttle program
becoming a glorified experiment in social engineering and special interest group
cheer-leading. Each successive launch included women, Blacks, and other racial
minorities, not for the sake of exploration, but for the sake of gender and racial
cheer-leading. The glory of NASA and mankind's great moments in space exploration
were all milestones performed under the watchful of an almost completely White NASA,
devoid of the hindrance of affirmative action programs and the shackles of Equal
Employment Opportunity mandates. The mandate then was to get the Moon; the mandate
soon after was the promotion of Blackness and diversity, at the expense of the
initial dream of exploring the stars.

'Whitey on the Moon': Race, Politics, and the death of the U.S. Space Program,
1958 - 1972 tells the shocking story of NASA's demise from an angle never-before
told: the racial angle.

Learn the story of Captain Ed Dwight, the Black Air Force pilot the Kennedy
Administration tried to force on NASA; learn about how General Curtis LeMay and
Lt. Colonel Chuck Yeager demanded accountability and stood against what the latter
deemed "reverse racism" in how the Kennedy Administration forced a Black astronaut
candidate on NASA just for the sake of having a Black astronaut candidate. Learn
about the "Poor People's Campaign" (led by Rev. Ralph Abernathy), which protested
the launch of Apollo 11 on July 16th, 1969, by showing up with a horse and buggy.
Rev. Abernathy demanded the money going to Apollo and space exploration be
redistributed to fight poverty and starvation in America's inner cities...

And his vision won out.

The final chapters of the book deal not with the exploration and colonization of
new worlds, but the redistributing of wealth to pay for EBT/SNAP Food Stamps cards
and other welfare payouts. We could have been on Mars, but we had to fund Black-
Run America instead...

Columbia’s Eclipse Planning!

Columbia hasn’t yet reached peak eclipse mania,
but we’re getting there. Preparations are beginning
to accelerate in advance of this summer’s total solar
eclipse, which will happen at 2:41 p.m. on Monday,
Aug. 21. The Columbia area is being billed as the
“total eclipse capital of the East Coast,” as the
Midlands is directly in the “path of totality” for
the solar event. Columbia will experience the
longest period of total eclipse on the Eastern
seaboard, as there will be 2 minutes, 36 seconds
of darkness in the middle of the afternoon. It will
be the first transcontinental total solar eclipse
in 99 years.

“Hotels are already getting pretty booked, and that’s
really exciting,” Montgomery says. “At last check,
they were starting to fill up like crazy. … We are
in a prime spot. … People are coming in from all over
the world to Columbia, and the Midlands in general,
just for this.

“There hasn’t been an eclipse that has traversed the
continental U.S. in 99 years,” Katz says. “I think
it’s pretty safe to say many of us are never going
to see it happen again...."

Major Traffic Jams During the 2017 Solar Eclipse!

The total solar eclipse of Aug. 21, 2017, will be an incredible celestial sight,
and a traffic nightmare. Anyone planning to commute into the path should plan
extra time. This map, created by eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler, shows the
progress of the moon's shadow:

With just about two months to go before the Aug. 21 total solar eclipse, one big
question is: Just how many people intend to travel into the path of totality,
which stretches from Oregon to South Carolina? "Imagine 20 Woodstock festivals
occurring simultaneously across the nation," said Michael Zeiler, an eclipse
cartographer who estimates conservatively that between 1.85 million and 7.4
million people may commute into the path. But unlike a concert, there are no
ticket sales for the eclipse, so no one has a definitive count of how many
people will attend. The only thing experts can do is speculate.

ECLIPSE CAPITAL OF THE EAST COAST!

Columbia, S.C., and its surrounding region are positioned in the best location
– the best on the East Coast, in fact – to witness a spectacle that has not
been seen in the continental United States since 1979, when a total solar eclipse
was visible from five Northwestern states. Even more compelling, a transcontinental,
total eclipse of the sun that passes from coast to coast has not occurred in the
U.S. since 1918. On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will be visible along
a thin, roughly 100 mile-wide path that runs diagonally across America from Oregon
to South Carolina. The difference between a partial eclipse and a total eclipse
is monumental -- even the difference between a 99% eclipse and a 100% eclipse is
remarkable enough to draw visitors from all over the globe when it occurs. Throughout
the long weekend of August 18-21, 2017, attractions, cultural institutions,
hospitality and retail businesses in Columbia, S.C. – the total solar eclipse
capital of the East Coast – will host special eclipse-related events leading up
to nature's grandest spectacle!

Eclipses That Changed Science!

Although they were once feared as an evil omen, solar eclipses have helped
to shape human history — and a few solar eclipses, in particular, have helped
to guide philosophers and scientists to a better understanding of the heavens
and our true place in the universe. Here is a countdown of 10 solar eclipses
that changed science:

These are two of the White men instrumental in putting men of their race on the moon. Small town Oxford, North Carolina (my own birthplace), is proud to claim NASA Administrator James Webb as one of its own.
