Rendezvous With Rama?

In October, astronomers using a powerful telescope in Hawaii caught sight
of something they'd never seen before: an asteroid from interstellar space
hurtling through our solar system. "We also found that it has a dark red
color, similar to objects in the outer solar system, and confirmed that
it is completely inert, without the faintest hint of dust around it,"
Meech, one of the authors of the new study, added. The asteroid appears
to be about 1,312 feet, or 400 meters, long, meaning that if you stood
it up on its end, it would be just slightly shorter than the Empire State
Building. The asteroid doesn't seem to play host to much ice or water,
but it could be rocky or metallic. Its red color comes from being bombarded
by radiation during its millions of years wandering the Milky Way through
interstellar space.

ABSTRACT:

None of the approximately 750,000 known asteroids and comets is
thought to have originated outside our Solar System, but formation
models suggest that orbital migration of the giant planets ejected
a large fraction of the original planetesimals into interstellar
space. The predicted interstellar number density of icy interstellar
objects of 2.4 × 10−4 au−3 suggested that these should have been
detected by surveys, yet hitherto none had been seen. Many decades
of asteroid and comet characterization have yielded formation models
that explain the mass distribution, chemical abundances and planetary
configuration of today’s Solar System, but until now there has been
no way to tell if our Solar System is typical. Here we report
observations and subsequent analysis of 1I/2017 U1 (‘Oumuamua)
that demonstrate the extrasolar trajectory of ‘Oumuamua. Our
observations reveal the object to be asteroidal, with no hint
of cometary activity despite an approach within 0.25 au of the
Sun. Spectroscopic measurements show that the object’s surface
is consistent with comets or organic-rich asteroid surfaces found
in our own Solar System. Light-curve observations indicate that the
object has an extreme oblong shape, with a 10:1 axis ratio and a mean
radius of 102±4 m, assuming an albedo of 0.04. Very few objects in our
Solar System have such an extreme light curve. The presence of ‘Oumuamua
suggests that previous estimates of the density of interstellar objects
were pessimistically low. Imminent upgrades to contemporary asteroid
survey instruments and improved data processing techniques are likely
to produce more interstellar objects in the upcoming years.

If an emissary from an alien civilization visited the solar system, how would we detect
it? Lauren Fuge investigates.

In October 2017 the first interstellar visitor ever spotted by human astronomers passed
through our solar system. It had been passing through for years and was on its way out
at high speed, having slingshotted around the Sun, when the Hawaii-based Pan-STARRS
telescope noticed the interloper. Even so, astronomers were able to figure out it was
no spaceship; it was a weirdly-shaped asteroid they christened `Oumuamua, which in
Hawaiian means “a messenger from afar arriving first”. Too bad for alien enthusiasts.
But what if it had been an extraterrestrial spacecraft? What tell-tale signs would
give it away?

More On 'Rama'

On October 19th, 2017, the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System-1
(Pan-STARRS-1) in Hawaii announced the first-ever detection of an interstellar
asteroid, named 1I/2017 U1 (aka. ‘Oumuamua). Based on subsequent measurements of
its shape (highly elongated and thin), there was some speculation that it might
actually be an interstellar spacecraft (the name “Rama” ring a bell?).

As they indicate in their study, the team relied on information from the ESO's
Very Large Telescope in Chile and the William Herschel Telescope in La Palma.
Using these instruments, they were able to obtain spectra from sunlight
reflected off of 'Oumuamua within 48 hours of the discovery. This revealed
vital information about the composition of the object, and pointed towards
it being icy rather than rocky. As Fitzsimmons explained in op-ed piece in
The Conversation:

Astronomers could tell that the 1,300-foot-long (400 meters)
'Oumuamua wasn't from around here based on its hyperbolic orbit,
which showed that the object wasn't gravitationally bound to the
Sun. Initially, scientists thought the body was probably a comet.
But 'Oumuamua displayed no cometary activity — no long tail, no
cloud-like "coma" around its core — even after getting relatively
close to the sun, so it was soon reclassified as an asteroid.

Oumuamua Stays Quiet...

If the first interstellar object ever detected in our solar system is actually
an alien spacecraft, it's operating in stealth mode.
