Cassini Death Dive

Post by Wade Hampton III » Thu Sep 14, 2017 6:22 pm

The end is nigh for NASA's Cassini spacecraft, which is now less
than 48 hours away from its scheduled death dive into Saturn.
At NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in southern California,
mission scientists are now preparing to receive Cassini's final
data transmissions early Friday morning (Sept. 15). Heat and
friction created by the fall will cause Cassini to break apart,
and its components to vaporize, only 2 or 3 minutes after it enters
Saturn's atmosphere.

Wade says, "NOVA has a special on the spacecraft which should air
again this weekend. There it not much worth looking at on the Jew
Tube these days but this one is an exception! Well worth the watch,
and is a freebee! Just stick your Rabbit Ears into the air and
Presto! Very kewel! Also neat snaps of the flight crew! Never saw
so many lily-White faces in my life!"

MISSION THAT WILL LIVE FOREVER!

by Nancy Atkinson...

“With Cassini, we had a rare opportunity and we seized it,” said Linda Spilker,
Cassini Mission Scientist. And on Friday, September 15, we say goodbye to this
incredible spacecraft. Since 2004, Cassini has been orbiting Saturn, exploring
the magnificent gas giant planet while weaving through an incredibly diverse
assortment of 60-plus icy moons, and skimming along the edges of the complex
but iconic icy rings.
