In order to justify the prescription of additive drugs(narcotics) pharmaceutical companies has convinced a lot of people that mental illness is due to chemical imbalances which has been dis-proven time and time again.

Ritalin/adderal improves concentration regardless of whether of not the patient actually has adhd, this is why many students use it.

However a lot of scientist does not buy into his methods http://www.quackwatch.org/06ResearchProjects/amen.html as far as i know it has not been proven that he actually is able to improve treatment and he is also very into prescribing a lot of drugs.

Of course it is just much easier to take Ritalin/adderal if you have concentration difficulties when studying, the demand for drugs tend to be met, there is several ways for students to get these drugs

I be leave on reason for the high drug usage is the policy to try to educate everyone, a large portion of the population will have a hard time with maths and other theoretical stuff and turn to stimulants on order to perform. I was also bored and unable to focus often when i was studying maths but i still passed the exams since i was talented in it, maybe i would have got a better grades if i had used stimulants but it would not be worth it.

I do not doubt that most people have mental issues, very few has "ideal" brains, actually no one has an ideal brain. Mental illness is not binary but it is a continuum where some people is more functional than others. Some people is highly functional in some arias and not well functioning in other areas.

1. Often loses temper.
2. Is often touchy or easily annoyed.
3. Is often angry and resentful.
4. Often argues with authority figures or for children and adolescents with adults.

6. Often deliberately annoys others.
7. Often blames others for his or her mistakes or misbehavior.
8. Has been spiteful or vindictive at least twice within the past 6 months.

Christianity is very difficult to cure, the patients strongly beleaves their delusions and they are culturally enforced. Marxism is also very difficult to cure without actually killing the patient.

People pretending to be mentally ill is more common than people realize, it is usually very difficult to know if the person actually beleaves the delusions/disorder(christianity, marxism, feminism) or just pretends to get benefits.

It is possible that methylphenidate (an indirect dopamine agonist) may contribute to basal ganglia volume decreases in broadly the same way that antipsychotics (dopamine antagonists) may cause basal ganglia volume increases in schizophrenia. There is evidence that methylphenidate causes acute changes in the T2 magnetic resonance signal in the putamen after a single dose.

"ritalin is not addictive" this is as rediculus as stating amphetamin isn't addictive, however it appears that an ever increasing dose of medication(drugs) is required to maintain the effect and hence it will satisfy the psychiatric definition of addiction http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/artic ... fects.html this is also likely to happen if the patient likes the drug(methylphenidate is similar to amphetamine).

He wants to redefine ADHD as being a developmental disorder of poor self control(prefrontal cortex deficit) however this view of ADHD as a pure disability(the self control of a 30% younger person). If it turnes out ADHD offers advantages(hyperfocus, creativity) it would invalidate Barkleys view of ADHD.

Hyperfocus

Barkley claims that hyperfocus is typical for autism and not ADHD, he claims that people with ADHD simply isn't able to stop when they are doing something interesting(perseveration). I tried to find studies on hyperfocus but i couldn't find anything conclusive.

Being able to hyperfocus is a very good thing, i am very glad i have that ability. What we see here is the "no true scotsman falacy", everything that doesn't fit his view of ADHD gets discarded as something else(new invented disorders). Barkley is regarded as an authority in his field and is well known in the world despite all this.

Also, despite their reduced working memory, 53% of the academically advanced students with ADHD characteristics scored at or above the 70th percentile on the creativity index. In fact, for both the ADHD and the non-ADHD group of students, the poorer the working memory, the higher the creativity!

Do drugs offer improvements
While many people(especially the ones hooked on methylphenidate or amphetamine salts) believes drugs help research shows the opposite http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/ar ... 9614000654 considering the long list of side effects there is really no excuse for prescribing these narcotics to children.

Sadly most people will assume that what an 'expert' states is true and not check the evidence. A lot of children are getting these highly addictive and mind altering drugs after their parents has been convinced be pseudoscience or simply trusting the psychiatrist.

Autism was oridginally a specific diagnosis for persons(mostly children) unable to communicate and with repititave body movements. It is similar to mental retardation in severe cases.

Currently autism is defined as people having troble communicating, habing ritualistic behavior and repetetive body movements. The problem with this definition is that there is many reasons why a person might show these behaviors, ritualistic behavour can be to OCD. Social problems can be due to many different issues.

ADD(currently called ADHD-PI) will cause result in you having trouble paying attention to details in social situation and you will also be likely to have special interests due to hyperfocus.

The likely explanation for this extreme increase in diagnosis is simply extreme overdiagnosing where children get these labels only for being different. Labels tend to be sticky and it will destroy the self esteem of the child and this will be the case for the disability.

While I believe that to be true for ADD and for ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder), it is not true at all for Autism.

Autism is quite specific and very unlikely to be mistaken for another disorder. It is on a spectrum, and each case is different, while having similarities (OCD, digestive issues, 'stemming', lack of communication or interest in doing so, certain inability to understand sentence structure, adherence to schedule and dislike of change, etc.)

Many of our greatest thinkers in Science are Obsessive-Compulsive. ADHD is also what many with an overactive front brain would be labeled.

But there is no doubt we have an increase in Autism, it is an epidemic, and the reason for this increase is uncertain.
Dr. Wakefield lost his career after he made a brain-gut connection in Autism. Because he was working with the families to litigate large drug companies, he lost his license to practice medicine in England. He believed in some children the damage was done by vaccines.
Some children cannot handle their immune system having a 'live virus' introduced-hence why you don't give a child a vaccination when ill, as their immune system is compromised.
Then there is the matter of Thimerosal (mercury) used as a preservative, and other components in vaccines.

That is not to say that vaccinations have not saved lives. They have. Measles, Mumps, Rubella have in the past rendered children blind, deaf, or deceased.
So this is a complex problem.

Anyone who has worked with Autistic children can attest to what Wakefield described: they have dietary habits, usually a dairy addiction (one child I worked with ate cheese sandwiches constantly), the dairy affecting their gut. They have the appearance of intoxication often times, upon eating dairy and/or gluten.

When you heal the gut with removal of dairy and gluten, some of these children begin to speak for the very first time (this is coupled with intensive Applied Behavioral Analysis therapy to 'draw them out' of themselves).

Although Autism certainly affects a child psychologically, it is really a pervasive developmental disorder.
Many Autistic children are quite brilliant. The old treatments for autistic children-and even some of the current ones-border on child abuse in many instances.
The Jewish Psychological world came up with ridiculous theories as to why a child was autistic.
They came up with the idea of the 'refrigerator mother' who was so 'cold' the child shut down. Many women who were not this way with their child at all were horrified, thinking they somehow harmed their child, believing this Freudian garbage.
Now we know better, thanks to people like Dr. Wakefield, Temple Grandin (Autistic genius), Jacob Barnett (Autistic child prodigy).
