15 Carl Sagan Quotes on Life, the Universe, and the Cosmic Perspective

When Carl Sagan studied the universe, he saw more than data and science. Known for popularizing and promoting public understanding of astronomy, the famed scientist was as much a creative thinker and writer as he was a planetary expert. He thought deeply about science and our solar system, seeing the forest for the trees, and the universe’s lessons among the “star stuff,” a term he made famous in an episode of his 13-part television show, Cosmos, which aired in the 1980s.

“We are a way for the universe to know itself. Some part of our being knows this is where we came from,” Sagan said on his show. “We long to return. And we can, because the cosmos is also within us. We’re made of star stuff.”

With profound lessons like this, Sagan applied a cosmic perspective to the human experience. He found awe in the interconnectedness of humans, Earth, and the solar system, and felt humbled learning that the same carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen atoms in our bodies were created by the stars some 4.5 billions years ago.

Sagan shared his scientific findings and life musings on his popular TV show and in several influential books, including Cosmos (which accompanied the show), Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space, and Contact, which was made into a film (starring Jodie Foster) in 1997.

His primary goal? Make planetary science more accessible. A leader in the country’s early space endeavors, he undoubtedly succeeded — and inspired countless people along the way. Nearly 25 years after his passing, many still turn to Sagan for inspiration and grounding. Here are 15 of his lasting lessons on what the universe can teach us about life.

Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were. But without it we go nowhere.
– "Cosmos," 1980
For small creatures such as we the vastness is bearable only through love.
– "Contact," 1985
Our preferences do not determine what’s true.
– "Skeptical Inquirer, 1995"
The Universe is not obliged to conform to what we consider comfortable or plausible.
– "Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space," 1994
Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality.
– "The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark," 1995
There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.
– "Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space," 1994
Every one of us is, in the cosmic perspective, precious.
– "Cosmos," 1980
The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. We are made of star stuff.
– "Cosmos," 1980
Exploration is in our nature. We began as wanderers, and we are wanderers still. We have lingered long enough on the shores of the cosmic ocean. We are ready at last to set sail for the stars.
– "Cosmos," 1980
Look again at that dot. That’s here. That’s home. That’s us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives.
– "Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space," 1994
Every kid starts out as a natural-born scientist, and then we beat it out of them. A few trickle through the system with their wonder and enthusiasm for science intact.
– "Interview in Psychology Today," 1996
In meeting people, it's rare that what I'm impressed by is their intelligence. There's much more likelihood that what I'm impressed by is their compassion, their optimism, their sense of humor-things of that sort I find much more compelling.
– "Interview in Psychology Today," 1996
The visions we offer our children shape the future. It matters what those visions are. Often they become self-fulfilling prophecies. Dreams are maps.
– "Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space," 1994

Sagan had some good insights, for a Jew that is. I've heard him disparaged as a "pop" scientist, but personally I enjoyed his presentation style.

I don't know much more about Sagan beyond than that he was a Brooklyn-born Jew: https://worldjewishcongress.org/en/bio/carl-sagan

He was highly promoted by the Jewish establishment -- like Freud or Einstein -- disproportionately, way beyond another rocket scientist, we are fmiliar with, who also had big about the cosmos: WLP. As it is Pierce, founder of Cosmotheism, also told uncomfortable truths about Sagan's kinsmen, so was therefore demonized by that same powerful Jewish establishment..

I frankly had no idea that he was Jewish. I never thought that he was very racialist though. I liked many of his ideas, and I even shared a birthday with him. I am a little disappointed to learn of his ancestry.

Since you are on this forum, I would assume you already know what to say, but for the chance you don't the benefit of posterity, and a good reminder for all of us:
It does not matter if a Jew is racially conscious of their Jewishness or not. It does not matter if they are active culturally or religiously with their Jewish identity, their people have bred among themselves for thousands of years to reinforce their desired traits, thought patterns, and unconscious behaviors, or quite simply put; their way of being, their race soul. He might not be conscious or aware of it, but the Jew will lie, he will deceive, and he will hate beauty and goodness. They have learned to look and act like us over centuries to blend in and better exploit us, preventing detection, in part due to some breeding with European populations, but they are still jews. Just because a jew says something that sounds good, or maybe is even true, does not mean he is to be trusted or believed as a person.

Benjamin, meet Richard. Richard, Benjamin. It's my belief that Richard's with us somewhat in spirit though not yet on our membership or supporter rolls and yet has had some interesting things to bring. Perhaps this will help to provide a bit of depth: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4525

Thats great! Maybe this young man will Join the NA. It took me awhile to join. Like 20 years or something, actually. Maybe he will also learn how to commune with someone who is by far his elder, is already a dues paying member/supporter and who has known about Dr. WLP and Cosmotheism far longer than he has in an APPROPRIATE manner.

We are getting way off topic here. Ben, don't be so quick to criticize RichardG. He is a valued member of our forum. Give Richard time to join; it took you 20 years! He has explained to us why he has been unable to join at this time. Pay attention and don't shoot from the hip at another forum memberr. We just picked up the July BULLETIN from the printer this afternoon and will mail it Monday with the following tribute to Dr. Pierce in it, written by Richard:
When informed that there is a topic in the popular Ideology and Philosophy section on the large Stormfront discussion board, with well over a half million views since it was started in 2007, entitled, "Is William Pierce Dead Forever," forum member RichardG. gave us his answer to that question:

He is not dead forever, he is not even dead today. Yes, the body and consciousness of Dr. Pierce are no longer here in our presence; the functions of these two things have ceased for 20 years now. And we call this death. But there is a second death, a greater death, a truer death that men must face, and that is the last time someone will speak your name, honor your memory, and think about who you were as a person during your short time on this earth. This second death is the fate of most of us, as even our descendants will forget us in time, few are known past their great grandchildren.
But a man, a hero, a paragon like Pierce, who lived as a martyr for his people because of his profound love for them and endured that hardship with unshakeable resolve and iron will, will never know the second death. He has transcended his earthly coil in death to become something greater than he ever could have been in life, a legend, a symbol, an ideal. Though he believed in no afterlife, he has life eternal in this form. He will now live in the hearts of our people eternally as a man who single handedly shaped the entire course of human destiny, no different than Alexander and Caesar, or Plato and Socrates. His words and deeds will be written on the hearts and minds of all our people to come, and by that he will live on eternal in those hearts and minds. So long as a single son of the North and a single daughter of Europa draw breath and understand their place in the Creator's divine will of self realization, Dr. William Pierce will not die.
He has become a part of the racial consciousness of our people, part of our race soul. So long as European men live, so does Pierce. His words and ideas will guide us through this treacherous period in which we now find ourselves, until, once again, our race stands as the unquestioned masters of this planet. Then he will guide us forward as we seed the stars with our life and beauty, spreading far and wide as we guarantee our racial survival. Finally, what he has taught will guide us not just as we master our world, but as we master ourselves and climb the spiral stairs of our genetic manifest destiny from the men we are today, to the Higher-man we will be tomorrow, to the godhood that is our purpose. And in that godhood will be the life, the words and deeds of Dr. William Luther Pierce, eternal and undying. -RichardG.on WhiteBiocentrism.com forum on 23 July, 2022
