Emma Sulkowicz uses alleged rape for college credit

Emma Sulkowicz is the Ivy-league student who will carry her mattress with her everywhere she goes in protest against the man who raped her. She made the announcement to the Columbia Spectator in the above video. The performance art piece will form part of Sulkowicz, a senior at Columbia’s, thesis, it’s also designed to spark debate.
Sulkowicz says she was raped by a fellow student two years ago. After a college investigation, the male student was found not guilty and allowed to continue in school.

The performance is entitled "Mattress Performance," or "Carry That Weight."

On September 2nd, the first day of classes, Sulkowicz could be seen walking around the Columbia University campus in New York City carrying her mattress. The mattress will eventually be part of her final thesis within the school’s Visual Arts department. She says she’ll carry on the campus wherever she goes and when she leaves the school, she’ll leave it in an art studio on campus. Sulkowicz added that she bought the mattress from the same company the college uses to supply its dorm room.

According to her Facebook page, Sulkowicz is a native of Manhattan. Prior to attending Columbia she was a student of the Dalton School. She also says that she worked at Billy Boy USA, a condom manufacturer for two years. She’s also a fencing enthusiast.
